Musical Theatre Society has played a fundamental role in my time at UCL.

Not only did being freshers rep last year, and being in 7 performances within the society (namely the Freshers Musical, 2 galas, 2 small shows and 2 Blooms shows) help me to grow as an artist, they have also helped me grow as a person. It has built up my self-confidence in ways I never expected, and helped me become the person I always wanted to be. The people I've met through MT society I now see as friends for life.

I now want to give that same opportunity to others. Having been on committee last year as fresher's rep, and incredibly involved with the society throughout my time at UCL, I have an in depth understanding of how MT soc functions. I wish to take this knowledge and use it to help the society grow.

Furthermore, from my extensive experience in welfare roles, being on my 6th form union, having written and directed my own play, and having organised a charity event which raised over £1600, I know how to bring the best out of people I work with.

I'd place a greater emphasis on creativity & originality within the society. As such, I propose to run a workshop with LM society to develop a new musical, and focus on originality overall.

I wish to expand the bounds of the sort of musicals that MT society not only puts on, but goes to watch. Hence, I propose to also organise trips to lesser-known musicals alongside well-known ones.

I'd also organise musical theatre club nights...

Francesca Rattray

Hello! I am Francesca - a 2nd year Human Sciences student running for President!

Musical Theatre Society has been an amazing part of my time at university; from performing as a fresher to now directing a show, I have loved the opportunities to be creative both on and offstage. Therefore, through being president I intend to continue to make musical theatre accessible to everyone including theatre fans, performers and creatives.

As President I will…

  • Continue to create opportunities for newer members - Upholding the freshers musical, the MT buddy system and regular performance opportunities.
  • Pre-book performance venues — I will pre-book desirable performance venues (e.g. JBR/Elvin Hall) over common performance dates before bidding to provide access to the best performance venues more often. This also allows for higher quality shows with larger cast sizes despite being a ‘small show’.
  • Increasing the efficiency of the bidding process — Finding fellow production members is difficult, especially for those newer to the society, so I will create a system that arranges budding producers/directors/musical directors with similar show interests to meet and formulate a production team, and increases bidding transparency.
  • Musical theatre careers — I want to provide greater career assistance through talks and workshops focused on the process of pursuing a career in the arts.

MT Society has been such a wonderful community to be a part of and lead in 24/25!

Aomi Hiroi

MT communities always hold a special place in my heart. This year, I immersed myself fully in MT society because musicals are my true passion, just like for many of you! I performed in Fresher’s musical, "Lift," and "The Producers," and served as one of the APs in "Chess" and other non-auditioned opportunities. Meeting and working with passionate and talented society members has been a blessing. I hope to contribute to this society that has provided me with such a wholesome community by supporting everyone who enjoys MT society as the president next year.

As a Fresher’s Rep, I learned about the committee’s responsibilities for the society's smooth and effective operation. I intend to build upon the current committee's initiatives, including but not limited to providing non-show-related opportunities such as choir and galas, and offering professional workshops. Given the nature of the society, which can become heavily focused on shows, I believe empathising the above initiatives is crucial for everyone to enjoy and feel included.

Moreover, I am excited about exploring new ideas, like focusing on MT band members and organising workshops related to producing and directing shows, to offer additional fun opportunities for the members.

Drawing from my experience as a committee member this year and as a prefect in sixth form, I am confident in my organisational skills, approachability, and ability to consider people’s opinions to enhance this amazing MT society we love!
