Lianne Ng

From participating in Biology olympiads to reading books on the human body, my enthusiasm for the life sciences is unwavering. This, coupled with my determination to contribute to the scientific community, have culminated in my interest in the Vice President role.

If elected, I aim to:

  1. Strengthen understanding of career opportunities. Invite representatives from related professions to share experiences and build confidence in students when hunting for future jobs.
  2. Boost enthusiasm for the discipline. Visiting St. Bartholomew’s Hospital museum to explore centuries’ worth of medical artefacts or watching “Resistance Fighters” to realise the dangers of a post-antibiotic era will inspire students to view life sciences with a newfound appreciation.
  3. Cultivate a sense of community. A family scheme where Y1s are children, Y2s are parents and Y3s and above are grandparents allows older students to provide advice and help younger students ease in.

Furthermore, my past experiences equip me for this role.

  1. As programme director of a school camp, I strengthened communication skills by delegating tasks to a team of 25.
  2. As vice president of the student council, I exhibited adaptability by planning creative virtual activities for Teacher’s day despite inflexible Covid restrictions.
  3. As leader of a student-led project, I showed initiative by producing an animated video promoting sustainable tourism.

I believe my passion, ideas and experiences make me suitable for this role.

Rebecca Kuan

Hi! I’m Rebecca, and I’m running to be your Vice President!

Being an officer in two UCL subcommittees (RAM & Medical Conference), I grasped the aspects that make a society lively and engaging. There, I’ve fostered connections with societies and sponsors, beneficial to enriching our social network.

Prior experience in planning my college formal and eco-challenges provided valuable insight into project execution, which I aim to leverage in advancing LSS's future initiatives.

Alongside a love for connecting with individuals, my tenure as Y1 Applied Medical Sciences rep and former college’s education committee secretary instilled in me the importance of effective communication, teamwork, and internal management across different levels. As VP, I commit to supporting my team and building on previous years' successes e.g stem ball.

If selected, I plan to:

  • Organise career-related workshops to equip individuals with useful skills e.g CV and cover letter workshops
  • Foster engagement among society members via competitions, Q&A panels, a scientific conference
  • Better integrate first-years into university life and the scientific space e.g a buddy or mentorship system
  • Promote collaboration with other societies within and outside UCL

With my enthusiasm and drive, I am fully committed to serving as your VP. I envision LSS as a nurturing environment where your ambitions can flourish, believing that the heart of our society is its members, and every decision I make will reflect this belief.
