Jayshiv Patel (He / him)
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

If elected I hope to make the LGBTQ+ network and its events a lot more inclusive space. Currently there is little ethnic diversity within the network, or atleast at the events they host. I hope to encourage more POC LGBTQ+ students to show up to events, since I feel many are reluctant to come because of the lack of diversity. I also believe many students are unaware of the network, so if elected I would love to do collaborations with cultural societies such as Indian Soc and ACS etc. to create exciting, fun and more diverse events and socials!

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?
  • Great leadership skills - as UCLOC welfare officer I have developed great communication and listening skills to be an effective leader
  • Lit socials and events - as a part of the RUMS Events committee I have great experience in organising and creating new events where we can have fun and meet new people!
  • A friendly face - I'm very approachable and as POC Rep I want any students to feel their concerns heard and I'll fight for what my students want!
Please summarise why students should vote for you.

Vote for me if you want a man of the people! As POC Rep I will voice your opinions and make sure you are heard. With my experience I want to make the LGBTQ+ network a much more diverse and inclusive space, and I hope to plan a lot more exciting and fun events and socials!

Iola Nkau (she/they)
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

If elected I’ll be committed to creating an inclusive, welcoming environment for POC students in the LGBTQ+ Network. As a queer POC I know not all spaces feel welcoming and want to ensure everyone can find a safe community within the network. I want to work alongside the Social Secretary to plan events specifically for POC, especially during Freshers, creating the opportunity to form a safe space and develop a sense of community.

I want to represent the views of POC LGBTQ+ students and help form a safer, more supportive environment for us through campaigning and advocacy.

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I’ll bring passion and enthusiasm. I’m proud to be a queer POC and will support others.

I’ve worked with The Diana Award to create anti-racist bullying training for schools, and have developed my understanding of the varying experiences of young POC. I understand the importance of not placing all experiences under one umbrella and instead platforming all voices and experiences. I have experience advocating at a policy making level and will use this in my role.

Most importantly I care and am willing to learn and develop to best represent POC within the network and the wider university.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

POC visibility within LGBTQ+ spaces matters and I want to ensure intersectionality is at the heart of the network to ensure it represents everyone fairly. Both LGBTQ+ and POC issues are important and I will make sure our views are heard and represented.

I also love the LGBTQ+ network socials and will always be happy to chat there. I’ve found a lovely community within the network and want everyone to have the same opportunity!

Together lets create a safe and supportive space for all us lovely POC LGBTQ+ folk UCL!
