Jaid Ahmed

The Islamic Society has helped me develop massively over the past two years and I would like to give back to the community from which I have gained so much.

My experience this past year helping with the Discover Islam Week Campaign has given me a taste of what it means support the muslim community on campus. If I were to be elected, my main aim would be to bring the muslim community on campus closer together, through various events and activities. I especially see this as important due to the struggles faced by muslims in the world today, and so see the importance in fostering this communal spirit to strengthen the resolve of young muslims on campus by providing a safe space for them to practice their religion.

Some of my plans include:

  • Creation of a more cohesive committee to ensure that campaigns and events run with a specific purpose
  • Work on a series events for spiritual and skills development for the ISoc community
  • Initiate active work and campaigns on issues that are relevant to UCL students - I.e. lack of enough prayer space in B2 specifically during the maghrib prayer, Jumu’ah facilities and providing new mats for it, timetabling that accommodates prayer, faith competent mental health services
  • Preparation for Ramadan, including securing Ramadan funding, as well as petitioning for timetabling to be flexible around Ramadan
  • Continuation of the ISoc’s key campaigns such as “Believe and Do Good Week", “Discover Islam Week”, “Charity Week”,  “Careers Week”
