The Society has been a wonderful chance to connect with other students for an important cause, and I have seen in myself and in others the benefits which it brings into its members’ lives. I am standing for Welfare Officer because it is important to me that everyone in this society feels like it is a safe place to come and connect with others as well as to help children around the world. It’s important to feel comfortable bringing up any concerns one may have in the society, and I will always be someone to whom you can speak confidentially and with the confidence that I will help you with any concerns you may have or address them more broadly within the society itself. One of UCL’s greatest strengths is being such a diverse university, and with this comes the responsibility of helping everyone feel prioritised and included. I plan to proactively seek ways to make our society a place where everyone feels welcomed and appreciated, and will consistently check in on our members as well as make our meetings and events comfortable, safe, and fun for everyone. In secondary school, I was on the Model United Nations committee, and often helped my classmates whenever they had an issue with the society, whether it was feeling disconnected from the group or being nervous about an upcoming conference to which we were travelling. I was consistently able to find solutions that made them feel more comfortable and know I can do the same with the Society.

Sasha O'Brien

Hi everyone! :) My name is Sasha, I’m a second-year student studying Arts & Sciences with a focus on Psychology and Migration Studies. I am also half Peruvian/half British but lived in Germany my whole life. I've been part of the committee as a Social Media Officer in the In Aid of UNICEF society and would love to be Welfare Officer next year!

After volunteering in a refugee shelter full-time for a year in Germany working as a kindergarten teacher, I became passionate about the safety and happiness of children and am dedicated to the values UNICEF promotes. I hope to translate these values to appropriately manage welfare concerns in our society. As I have had experience working on the committee, I hope to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone feels comfortable and content. With a background in Psychology, I am well-informed on welfare concerns and want everyone to feel that they can always come to me with any problem.

Thank you for your support, I am excited about the journey that lies ahead and meeting all of you to make this the best year for In Aid of UNICEF!

As the Welfare Officer, I would be responsible of ensuring the well-being and happiness of all the members of the society, as well as promoting a culture of inclusivity, diversity and above all respect. I would also be the main point of contact for any issues or concerns that members may have and I would work closely with the committee and the university to provide support and guidance.

I believe that I have the skills and qualities to be an effective Welfare Officer. I am compassionate, empathetic and friendly. I have good communication and listening skills and I am able to handle difficult situations with sensitivity and professionalism. I am also organised, reliable and proactive. I am passionate about the work and the values of this society and I would like to make a difference in the world and in the lives of my fellow students. I think being the Welfare Officer would be a rewarding and fulfilling opportunity for me to grow as a person and as a leader.
