I am looking to run for the treasurer position because I feel that I am a well organised and efficient individual who would best be able to manage the income and expenses. I enjoy working with others and feel that I would be best suited to liaise with other committee members as well as the Student Union. My skills and experience are in the realm of office work and organisation as well as editing and writing in the Ripple Magazine :). As well as this I took a gap year last year so I definitely have experience in budgeting!

My experience has solidified my value for both teamwork work and individual work, I believe I would be best suited for the tasks at hand since I am able to work effectively in both regards. I would ensure everyone's opinions would be heard and considered, and I would address any issues and conflicts at first point of contact. I would strive to make decisions as pragmatically as possible to ensure everyone would be accounted for. I would also aim to curate a cohesive vision with other committee members regarding the society's day to day functioning, and plan accordingly to prepare for larger events such as the Geog soc ball. My goal in this position would be to present the Geographical society as a united front in all aspects and ensure that behind the scenes everything is organised and clear for all members. The treasurer position is one of the most fundamental to the society and I really hope that you will consider voting for me for this position!

Miguel Cafoor Camps

I want to ensure that GeogSoc’s events remain accessible to all by keeping ticket prices for events low whilst providing a range of different events to bring geography students together. I also want to help the society gain more opportunities through grants, expanding the pool of funding which can be used to improve the society’s offerings.

I am passionate about expanding GeogSoc’s ability to hold more events and socials to enrich geography students’ experiences, learnings and opportunities to meet more people within the department. Additionally, I want to ensure that GeogSoc events can maintain a high level of quality and variety whilst remaining achievable within budgetary restraints.

I have many of the required skills such as budgeting and handling finances. I developed this when I helped turn a previously struggling short-term rental business around and generated $72,000 of profit for the company by increasing the number of bookings and carefully managing the budget. This provided me with skills in keeping detailed financial records as I recorded the flows into and out of the account. I learnt to communicate with the team on the financial results and how we could achieve the wider business aims within the budget. This furthered my communication and teamwork skills whilst also summarising complex financial records. I also have significant experience with Excel from my course and the rental business allowing me to conduct necessary calculations and create financial records.

Firstly, the importance of maintaining a positive bank account is essential to keeping the geographical society running. As treasurer I aim to ensure that all resources will be spent wisely and transparently.

I have previous experience in running finances by keeping my own bank account positive (hard to do during first year) as well as having previous financial background as part of finance society at school.
