Gideon Chan

Hey there, this is Gideon!

I have been incredibly proud to contribute to one of the oldest and most prestige geographical societies in the world, and would like to stand for President to create an inclusive, creative, and intellectual environment where every one of us can share our geographies with each other. As a first-year representative, I have witnessed incredible potential in the Geographical Society where we shape our community and form friendships, as I have met so many wonderful geographers who every day stimulate me with unimaginable worldviews. I am passionate in continuing the legacy of the Geographical Society as a space where we share our love for Geography and learn about the world together.

With my experience in event planning, such as co-organising the Chinese New Year dinner from venue booking to ticket allocation as well as the annual winter ball, I believe I have the ability to deliver creative activities in which everyone may experience something new. I have worked hard in receiving feedback from other first-year course mates as their representative, making sure that everyone has a say in the society and see themselves as a part of it. My goal as President is to stimulate more affordable cross-year-group events such as debates, workshops, trips, hikes, and socials, so everyone can learn from one another while having fun together.

After all, as we produce our own geographies in a new page of the Geography Society, I would like to create mine with you.

Zaara Atho

Hi, I’m Zaara! I have always wanted to run my very own society for people that share my love for geography so imagine how happy I was to discover Geogsoc when I became a student at UCL. I was determined to get involved since fresher’s week and I’m not even kidding when I say that I thought about being president since then!

I believe that I have the interest and expertise to run this society as I have had substantial amounts of experience with leading clubs/societies in the past, such as Art Club, Essay Club, and even the Layout Team of my sixth form magazine. I love working with people, sharing ideas, and constantly finding new ways to explore my love for Geography. As president, I aim to continue the inclusivity that this society prides itself on by encouraging more members, events, and mingling of different age groups.

I also want to introduce an open-door policy where members and prospective members feel comfortable enough to approach me about anything. Leading a society is one thing, but even simply being a member can be the reason you find friends for life! Some of the best people I know, I have bonded with (or even met) through events hosted by this society and I want every member to have the same experience!

So, if you love Geography as much as I do, want to talk about clouds, the climate, or everything nerdy about this subject while also having fun and making a lasting impact within our community, I’m the one you’re looking for!
