I am Giulia, I study biomedical sciences for my first year. For several reasons, I am considering applying for the role of inclusion officer.
Being an international student, I am aware of how challenging it is to fit in at a new university. I recall being afraid to attend any gathering by myself and as someone who has experienced severe shyness, I can well identify with this attitude, and I understand how incredibly hard it is to push yourself. The process would have been so much simpler if there had been a welcoming face at the entrance. I would want nothing more than to be that person for any fellow student, preventing them from making the same mistakes I did and losing out on far too many opportunities.
Second, it is crucial to ensure that inclusion is considered at every event the society or committee plans.This means that the event must be accessible to everyone, regardless of physical limitations.Nobody should ever feel unwelcome. Having travelled significantly, studying five languages, and living in five different countries will enable me to guarantee that everyone is in an ideal environment. Sadly, it is common for people in our time to utilise offensive slang or phrases in a lighthearted manner. This, diminishes all of the hard work that is put in to fight for these issues on the daily. I want to be able to confront this behaviour and address it. I'm certain that as an inclusivity officer I will provide a safe and comfortable environment for any biomed enthusiasts.
Hi everyone! I’m Haowen, running for biomed inclusivity officer.
As a biomed student, I feel very excited about this new society, and I really appreciate the lively and kind nature of our society. I truly wish that I could contribute to our society and collaborate with our members to create even more possibilities for biomed soc.
Being an international student, I have been studying abroad since the age of 12, firstly in the US then in the UK. I have been communicating with students from various backgrounds, and I have helped resolve students’ difficulties through collaborations with the committee in previous schools. Thus, I’m very aware of the importance of different cultures, physiological and mental wellbeings, genders and more, and I greatly appreciate the diversity among us. As an academic rep, I am always keen to listen to students’ voices with patience and understanding. I will always try my best to help and support every member’s needs, including your kind suggestions for improvement to our society.

UCL fosters a very diverse community for the people in it, including every one of us. I hope that I can provide support by facilitating an inclusive environment where everyone feels comfortable and relaxed engaging in sessions and activities, thereby getting the most out of them.
In the past, I have taken several leadership roles in school clubs and societies, and have planned and carried out numerous successful activities throughout terms. Therefore, I have confidence in myself organising future events as well as coordinating with others.
With strong feelings of caring towards others and having worked with people from minority backgrounds and/or with special needs through past volunteering practice, I believe that I have sufficient experience and enthusiasm for the position.
If I do have the honour to be the Inclusivity Officer, I will do my best to fulfill the duties, based on and prioritising the needs of society members. I am determined to make sure every voice is heard, every need is met, and everyone is included through planning regular inclusivity-centered events such as socials and guest-speaker sessions.
I really hope that I could work with people with the same interests and in the same discipline, assist the President and other Officers to make the society a welcoming place, and contribute my part to help build connections.

I am nominating myself for the role of Inclusivity officer as I believe that this is a crucial aspect in any successful society. I strongly believe that everybody should feel respected, valued and should be given equal access to all opportunities available no matter their financial or ethnic background. As inclusivity officer this would be my main goal, especially as I myself have studied at state schools my whole life. Coming here to UCL, I instantly felt supported and part of the community and I want to make sure that everyone has the same positive experience. I would ensure that everyone’s voice is heard and any concerns are addressed in the most appropriate manner. I have been described as an empathetic and approachable person and my aim is to create a safe space for everyone to express their feelings and opinions. I'm a second-year BioMed student (Drug Mechanism stream) and I'm very excited at the prospect of being on the committee and ensuring this is a welcoming and wholesome place for all BioMed students. I have personally felt the need for such a society/community within UCL for us to meet, chat, and engage in career and academic-related events where we can all support and learn from one another. As an international student who graduated high school with an international curriculum, I strongly believe that we need a space where the needs and concerns of students from all backgrounds can be voiced and discussed. This way all students, in all years can feel connected to their cohort and their seniors. By having monthly touchpoints like coffee mornings or socials, we can discuss event ideas, support each other academically, and chill after busy weeks. As Inclusivity officer, I will work closely with the Welfare Officer and Social Secretary to make this possible. I will also work on making events more accessible in terms of the venue we choose, providing an online attendance option, and being a person to contact when any accessibility needs are to be helped with.
