Sunnie Chan

Hi! I'm Sunnie, a second-year PPE student. I always find the lack of discussion on Asian current affairs in academic discourse disappointing. Being a part of the writers' group and an executive at AA this year, I’ve seen how this powerful platform fills the gap in academic discourse. I hope to help this amazing community grow as your president!

Some new ideas I hope to bring to AA:

  • Biweekly News Summary by Regional Representatives: To address the Western-centric bias in mainstream media and expand our focus beyond East Asia, I plan to recruit student representatives from different Asian countries, offering translated summaries of handpicked local news in our biweekly newsletter.
  • Establishment of a Flagship - Annual Conference: Delve deeper into popular topics from our journal, featuring experts and academics.

Synergies within the committee:

  • Journal Publication: Work with Publication Officer to continue monthly releases. Expand our writers' group and encourage ad-hoc submissions
  • Event Variety: Work with Events Director to collaborate with UCL societies and externals for embassy visits, museum tours, and speaker events
  • Community Building: Organise regular socials with Welfare Officer, strengthen bonds among our members and with other Asian cultural societies
  • Online Presence: Support Marketing Director in creating engaging content to grow readership and boost social media exposure
  • Financial Sustainability: Securing grants and diversifying sponsorship with
Owen Tsai

As an active member of the society for 5 months, through participating in events, signing up to be a regular writer for the society's publications, and later to be an executive of the society, I have to grown to care for it, and is determined to keep it afloat and make it better. As the society is relatively new, I see 3 necessary actions to better it. I want to ensure that our excellent publication goes on and gain more attention for its outstanding quality, able to keep up with other societies'. I want to honour the immense effort that our last few executive teams have contributed, and keep implementing their vision with my best interpretation. I want to expand the society, through bigger, better and more events, and gain a larger following with a sense of belonging to our society.
