Chinua Onyia

If there is one thing that my experiences have taught me, growing up in Nigeria and moving to London at eleven, it is that having a sense of belonging and community is invaluable. From a young age, I learnt to deal with the culture shock that accompanies the shift from a community of people that looked and talked like me to one where I was completely different. So, I can confidently say that for many members of the ACS, having a space where their blackness and culture is embraced rather than suppressed has had a positive impact on them. My desire to stand for ACS secretary stems from this, the ability to contribute to the development of a community where people can simply be themselves.

An ideal secretary forms the foundation of any society, guaranteeing a seamless flow of information, effective coordination, and open communication. As someone who strongly believes in the power of efficient organisation and clear communication, I can wholeheartedly promise to be the secretary that the ACS deserves. For instance, I plan on reviving the ACS newsletter as a tool to keep ACS members informed on the activities of the committee. In my opinion, this will increase community involvement and serve as an opportunity for the average member to have a say – giving everyone a voice. Additionally, I hope to be a supportive figure in the society, for example, by helping other members with their own tasks when needed – ensuring that community starts within the committee. Thank you.
