African Caribbean Society: President

Hi everyone, my name is Jadon and I am a first year HPE student and I will be running for president this year!

The ACS has been a beacon of cultural celebration and support for people of Black heritage and has been where I have made a large proportion of my friends in first year. As ACS president I want to give back by being the president of a society which has been a big part of my start to life at UCL.

Leadership is a quality which is not new to me having been captain of my football team and a senior prefect in secondary school. As ACS president the ability to communicate effectively and handle pressure is extremely important. My experiences have equipped me with these traits which are necessary to succeed as a president.

Through my active participation and attendance at nearly all ACS events, my engagement in Panafrik as an actor and model, and my contributions to the UCL ACS football team I have witnessed firsthand the positive impact the ACS brings but also been able to see where things could be improved in the next academic year.

My key aims are:

· To increase the number of inter ACS events allowing people to connect with students from other ACS societies across London and even the country.

· Make the ACS committee more personable and be figures who people can talk to and be exposed to on a day to day basis rather than people to see specifically at events.

When I began my journey at UCL, my biggest concern was making friends with people from similar backgrounds. Joining the ACS not only made this successful but highlighted the significance of initiative, commitment and effort to do so – qualities crucial to a President’s role. As I formed my personal friendships, I noticed a divide within the wider ACS community that I was passionate to close. This passion is the driving force I’ve used to run for President. I aspire to be the voice of our society by leading and directing my peers in the committee to fulfil our roles. Before running, I created the first ACS Snapchat group chat for our cohort, leading to a games night I organised and hosted with the help of my friends. The success of this event taught me not to limit my impact but advance this into the next year. Being the minority at UCL, it is easy to feel marginalised, but I aim for the ACS to continue acting as a place to embrace differences and form a sense of community. My primary focus for the next year is inclusivity for all, regardless of where they grew up. Using my natural confidence, I connected with people on both personal and collective levels, but I pride myself being equally engaging with the reserved members of our community. I envision the future of the ACS to thrive as a unified and supportive community, and through leadership, integrity and enthusiasm, I see no reason why this is impossible.
