Having held a committee position this year, I would like to run again, this time for Welfare secretary. I think this is such an important role in the society because everyone needs to feel included into RUMS tennis it to continue being the great society that it is. Following in Maxi’s vein, I’d like to organise more chill events like the film screening and the Christmas dinner so that there is more to socials than just drinking :)

Obviously I’d do my best to make everyone feel welcome and happy, and I’m a really approachable person so members can come and chat about any concerns. Having been social tennis coordinator this year has given me the experience of welcoming new members and making sure they feel at home at weekly tennis sessions, and it has been really fun getting to know both new and long-term RUMS tennis players. I’m already looking forward to another great year ahead for the society!!

Working alongside Maxwell Jay Bruno Reinstein, my life role model and current Welfare Secretary, I closely observed his endeavours, took careful notes and learned the ins and outs of the craft throughout the year. However, my job as a Welfare Sec wouldn’t be limited to emulation.

Since numerous members of the team complained about sports nights being non-inclusive for non-drinkers, I am planning to introduce monthly Welfare Nights (alongside regular sports nights), focused on well-being, friendships and prosperity rather than binge drinking. As a Welfare Sec, I want to make sure everyone’s voice is heard and that no one feels discriminated against.

Furthermore, a good Welfare Secretary should make sure that members of the team always feel included, safe and understood. To achieve that, a Welfare Secretary has to be someone everyone knows, someone whom they don’t fear, who will be there to listen if need be. As a certified BNOC, approachable and friendly person, I believe I can and will fulfil the above and would therefore make for an excellent Welfare Secretary.

Here are a few quotes that support my claims:

  • “If only we had sports nights without drinking games in RUMS Tennis…” – Roger Federer, 2023
  • “Alex is such a lovely guy - I know that he’s always there for everyone and that he really cares. He’d make for a great Welfare Sec” – Emma Raducanu, 2023
