I will formalize the Student Speech Contest into a more fledged out TEDx event, as well as stretch the time frame for both this event and the main speaker event. A bit more long-term, structured planning can go a long way to making a streamlined event that is both more comfortable for speakers and more transparent in its operation.

I've had experience doing precisely this when head organizing TEDxDeerfield, where I standardized a student TEDx event, created a nomination process for attracting speakers, and created a sponsorship structure to run that event.

If elected, I will structure next year's events by the end of this year's 3rd term. This means that all relevant dates and deadlines, themes, and event marketing materials will be decided and presented to the public well in advance of the actual events. This would give prospective student speakers AMPLE TIME to develop and refine their ideas, allow speakers in the main event to schedule around our events (instead of limiting our speaker choices to those whose schedules naturally match), and allows the committee to spend more time working with speakers and students closer to the event in a less chaotic and rushed environment.

Let's spread ideas more efficiently.

Shreiya Singh

Hi, I'm Shreiya, a second-year history student! This year, I had the pleasure of being a part of the TEDx society conference team, where I gained insight into the society and its events. Participating in the delivery of the speech contest and the main TEDxUCL conference was not only incredibly enjoyable and fulfilling but also taught me valuable event management skills.

As the Events Director of the TEDx society, I would propose a range of events to encourage the involvement of society members and expand our society's reach and impact. These events would include:

  1. Regular speech showcases that allow students to share their work and help members develop their public speaking skills in a relaxed and supportive environment.
  2. Collaborations with other societies for speaker events and talks to expand our outreach.
  3. Introducing more workshops, to build on the success of our public speaking workshop from last year. I will also expand the range of skills covered in these workshops.

I plan to implement these initiatives in addition to continuing to successfully deliver membership discussions and the main TEDxUCL conference. In addition, I would like to increase the frequency of social events and make them a more regular occurrence in order to provide more opportunities for members to engage with each other.

I am committed to delivering these events to the highest standard and look forward to working with the TEDx society team to make them a success.

Batool W Zaidi

Not sure if you’ve bumped into me before in TEDx salon sessions but I am quite the enthusiast when it comes to deep evening conversations about politics, AI, climate change, arts and other topics from TEDx talks.

My name is Batool and I’m a first-year in Arts and Sciences. I would like to be the Event Director to lead and organise the fortnightly TEDX salon sessions, our most regular society event in which we watch a TEDx talk and discuss it as a group afterwards. This year I was TEDx conference support at UCL which involved running around organising stage design and catering for the main conference. During my A Levels in school I also volunteered for the TEDX society and helped curate and organise the speakers for the annual TEDx conference in GC University in Pakistan.

Aims for organisation of TedX salons and events:

  • Snacks? I will find out if we have the budget for snacks since evening discussions require energy ?
  • More social events as a society !!
  • Selection of TEDx talks for the TEDx salon sessions aligned to current events - e.g. talks centred around natural disasters, refugee crisis and Ukraine conflict.
  • Collaborations with other societies to expand the TEDx influence
