Amelia L B Snook

I am determined to increase involvement in Surgery and feel that I have sufficient experience to organise and expand Surgical Society. I can guide promotions with experience as media officer for UCL Tennis and Future Frontline and my role as Assistant Director of Medics4Medics will help me to support the mental well-being of our members in a challenging surgical career. Other experience includes:

  • FutureFrontline Current Students Co-Director (recently hosting over 250 students in interview workshops and webinars)
  • SurgSoc Education Officer (introducing new teaching events, including year 6 to FY1 transition webinars [from March 2023] and next week's CPSA workshop for over 45 year 2 students)
  • Co-Founder of the Pharmacology Mentoring scheme
  • Committees for Plastics Conference (2022) and iNUGSC (2023)
  • Multiple Surgical Society subcommittees (such as WinS)

As President I would:

  • Encourage mentoring and networking between the years through inter-year social events ('Student Stories' panels)
  • Support more collaboration so that students can develop their own projects such as teaching courses
  • Invite surgeons to networking events at least twice a term so that students can interact with people at different stages in their surgical career in a relaxed environment and make valuable contacts to help them access placement and research opportunities confidently
  • Widen participation by building a fund for course and conference places
  • Collaborate with charities and fundraise
Zahra I H Ahmed

Hi, I'm Zahra, current Plastic Surgery Chair & iBSc Surgical Sciences.

My work as Plastics Chair:

  • Held one of the largest single specialty conference in Surgical Society history.
  • Held a 10-week Plastic Surgical Skills Course
  • Co-organised a Hackathon with PLASTA (Plastic Surgery Trainee Association)
  • Built a robust link with the Royal Free Plastics department leading to teaching invitations for students.

I am proficient in SU administrative tasks & will be able to make this less tedious for the committee.

My strategy in line with the Royal College of Surgeons.

  • COLLABORATION

I will encourage each specialty chair to hold at least one collaborative event between different specialties, universities or in conjunction with the surgical department.

  • INNOVATION

I will create a new "Innovation Chair” responsible for organising a Hackathon and AI events.

  • RESEARCH

I am passionate about research in surgery and next year I will work with specialty chairs to create a comprehensive list of surgical projects for students to get involved in.

Surgical experience:

  • Invited to present at the Surgical Research Society leading to publication in the British Journal of Surgery,
  • 2 papers awaiting peer review.
  • Observed/assisted in more than 50 cases.

My success as Plastics chair is shown from the events held and the increased @uclpras Instagram engagement. I am dedicated to building on the work of the current committee to make 2023/24 a great year for Surgical Society.
