Abishah Sooriyakumar

Though it hasn't been long, I've thoroughly enjoyed every interaction with the RUMS society. Whether it be through the RUMS family tournament or working with the academic reps, they've helped me through the tough transition and I hope I can get an opportunity to do the same for others and assist the team too.

The general secretary position is something best suited to me because of my previous experiences as:

  • Year 1 C&B academic rep: I’ve been able to gain an insight into how the medical school works and improve my professional communication skills through speaking with teachers but also via emailing and sorting out UNITU posts. The whole opportunity has been a great chance for me to show my passion in sharing ideas and help in creating changes for my peers.
  • GP admin: I have learnt how to handle multiple tasks at once and work in a high pressure environment.
  • Deputy Head Girl: During this position I had to organise many events with speeches and write minutes for meetings we attended weekly. I was also head of communications where I wrote the weekly bulletin for our sixth form and regularly communicated within my prefect team and teachers to ensure there was clear transmission of information within our team and my peers.

I’m keen to show my dedication for this wide ranging job and assist others in the committee. I hope to work with everyone and continue to share our aim of being one of the voices that bring change and make our time in the medical school better. .
