I feel an intense love for and connection with musical theatre. It, to me, has always felt like the pinnacle of the arts; a combination of singing, acting, writing, and music - the ultimate artistic collaboration.

Even in the short time that I've been here, I have already managed to perform in three separate musical theatre events, including a Bloomsbury show, and am currently one of the leads in a fourth. This, alongside being freshers representative, I believe demonstrates not only my commitment to and passion for the society, but also my ability to balance time, and an understanding of how each of the sometimes disparate parts of the society operate.

I have also realised that there seems to be an astounding number of traditions within the society, which is a great thing to have, but it does also seem to sometimes encumber creative practice and room for new forays into different areas of musical theatre. I  wish to encourage new ideas and change within the society, alongside maintaining the brilliance of the society as it is.

Furthermore, there seems to be this incredibly strange stigma around straight men joining musical theatre, despite MT arguably being the most inclusive society at UCL. I feel that I could work to ameliorate this, because ultimately all that should matter in joining MT is whether MT speaks to you, and of course, having fun.

I would also bring back MT Holiday (aka the countryside trip). And organise a second musicality ball.

Jordan Lam

Hi there! I am Jordan and it would be my pleasure to be the president of MT next year!

My MT journey started with the fresher’s musical in 2021 and I went on to be a part of many AMAZING productions since then. Specifically, I was a part of three Blooms shows (9to5, RENT, My Land’s Shore) and one small show (Tick Tick Boom), where I served in various positions, including lead actor, producer and director. With my experience in these productions, I’m very confident that I have what it takes to put on good shows/events and lead the society forward!

If I’m elected, I aim to work on three main aspects of the society:

  • Inclusivity: Ensure that MT continues to be a welcoming, accessible and safe environment for students from all backgrounds to enjoy the fun of musical theatre. This includes organizing more non-audition showcases and maintaining the MT choir & band.
  • Community: Organize more socials for the MT community, whether that be our annual Musicality ball, theatre café/mullys karaoke, or theatre trips.
  • Workshops: Collaborate with other societies, such as drama and dance, and host workshops to develop our members’ talents!

MT has such a special place in my heart as it is where I made lots of precious memories, met many fabulous people, and developed confidence in myself. As a final-year student next year, I'd love to give back to this place and I’m all about getting everyone to enjoy being in this community as much as I do!
