Abi Walton

Hi! I'm Abi Walton, currently a second year studying history. I have valued how open and welcoming the Labour Society at UCL has been for me and my friends and for this reason, I want to run for Welfare Officer to help other people feel as welcome as I did.

As a fairly shy person myself, I understand how daunting socials and events can be for some people, especially those involving alcohol. Therefore, as Welfare Officer I will endeavour to make sure everyone feels included and foster a safe atmosphere, where everyone can feel able to have their voice heard.

I especially want to encourage women to feel as though they can get involved in the society, as politics (and often political societies) can feel heavily male-dominated. Having worked under current Shadow Secretary for Women and Equalities, Labour MP for Oxford East Annaleise Dodds, it reminded me the importance of seeing women in politics in a day and age where equality seems to be more of a talking point rather than any effective action.

In terms of action, I'd be looking to work with the Social Officer to encourage more female speakers at our events, as I feel women are underrepresented. I would also want to work with the Treasurer to invest in preventative measures against spikings at our events involving alcohol, as this seems to be an ever present issue here in London and across the country.

I hope you vote for me as your Welfare Officer to continue to make the Labour Society a wonderful place!
