Naoki Parker

Hi, I'm Naoki. I’m half-Japanese, half-British, and raised in the UK.

I’m running for Secretary and Welfare Officer because I’d like to get involved not just in one section of the committee but all sections, as I’ve really enjoyed all aspects of the Japan society including the events, language lessons, and committee meetings. Getting to know all sorts of people who are all connected by their interest and passion for Japan has been great!

As Secretary and Welfare Officer I will take lead during events and make sure they run smoothly. I will also assist other committee members when required such as helping with language lessons, organising events, and running meetings when the President can’t make meetings.

My experience in the society as a sub-committee member, level 3 language teacher, and level 2 senior teacher means I have knowledge of all sections of the society and how they are run. I also have a strong grasp on how to plan for events and which events are more popular with members.

My experience and passion in all aspects of the society mean I am fit for the Secretary and Welfare Officer role which demands versatility.

Thank you for reading my manifesto and please do reach out @naokiparker on Instagram for any questions!

Antony Chew

Hi, I’m Antony, currently a third year UG medical student. This year, I really went for it in terms of extra-curricular clubs. Alongside Japan society, I am part of music society, Jiu Jitsu society and even Kendo society. I’ve always been a musical person, classically trained in four instruments; I’m also fond of martial arts and fitness. And of course I’ve enjoyed Japan society’s amazing events.

But next year, I’ll be narrowing down to focus solely on Japan society. Why? I strongly believe that Japan Society can be a one-stop shop for all the socials, flagship events, education and want for a tightknit community that a UCL student needs. I see massive potential and hope to take part in transforming and elevating the society.

So, as part of the committee, I’m running for the secretary and welfare officer role. The role itself is ambiguous and best described as an “odd jobs” position; I love the range it provides, spanning from the language leads to events and socials. But I have a really clear image of the role can best support our 350+ members in the future – one that actively gathers useful feedback that improves the event to greater success.

I’m best suited, because I value each and every person, and am not afraid to speak up for those who feel isolated or marginalised. I also understand the importance of creating activities and events that naturally encourage engagement and involvement – though I really vibe with the (sometimes) shy, introverted, Japanese customs.
