Candidates

Annabelle Ali

I am standing for this role as I can make a positive contribution to the society. I have previous leadership and organisational experience, making me a suitable candidate for the position. I work very well in a team, knowing when to lead and I bring out the best in others. I would like to develop my own skills but also help progress the society in line with the vision of the President and the other reps. I will help with the general running of the society and support the other representatives with the demands of their roles. In my previous experience, I have worked very closely with staff so I can successfully communicate and be the link with the department and the society, representing the interests of the students. I have previously represented my school to prospective parents and students online and during open days so I know how to interact with offer holders and the importance of engaging students to inspire them to study here and offering information for parents.

Izzy Lewis

Hey guys, my name is Izzy and I would like to be your General Secretary for the upcoming academic year.

As General Secretary, I will strive to support everyone within the society, be it communicating any hopes and ideas to the rest of the team, or assisting in scheduling events etc. Regardless of magnitude, I am always ready to help with any concerns or queries.

I am applying for this role as I am eager to expand my skills; enjoy solving problems and wish to take on more responsibility by becoming more involved with the Geography Society, and helping all its members and activities.

I am a BA undergraduate Geography student with experience working as a General Assistant, as this is my role in my current job. This makes me experienced in communication skills, time management and organisation, as well as critical team working skills. As such I feel ready to take on this role with confidence, and will strive to make sure everyone has the best (and also the easiest) experience possible.

Olivia Matthews

Hi, my name is Olivia and I’m applying to be your General Secretary next year! I am standing as I believe I am well organised, having kept up with taking 5 modules in my first term alongside joining new societies and adjusting to university life. I am a friendly and outgoing person, which I think would make me a good representative for both the geographical society and geography department overall.

This year I have been one of the first year representatives on the geography department SSCC. This has allowed me to gain confidence in speaking with a wide range of people to collect feedback and relay this across to academic staff.

Previously, I have volunteered to represent my college in open days for prospective students, acting as part of a team to be welcoming, approachable, and informative. When I was deciding whether to study at UCL, I really benefited from the departmental offer holder day I attended- it actually made me choose to confirm my choice to study here. Because of this I am enthusiastic about organising these in future, and would love to share my experiences with prospective students and their parents.

If possible, I would also love to incorporate more engagement for offer holders not able to attend any in-person events, such as online Q&As with students in the department.

I hope you choose to vote for me to be your General Secretary, and please get in touch with me if you have any questions!

Joseph Wood

This role would enable me to utilise my skills to maintain the diversity and access which current leadership has worked so hard to develop.

Skills

  • Teamwork (my P-T job)
  • Organisation
  • Leadership
  • Problem-solving
  • Interpersonal skills

My prefectship at Sixth Form enabled me to communicate, and build lasting relationships with both senior staff members and peers. Likewise, my Geography Representative position allowed me to liaise with both students and departmental staff, and gave me the opportunity to choose topics of discussion for society meetings. Winning the Geography Prize from a cohort of 50 and helping lead the Geography Open Days, where I informed prospective students of the curriculum and persuaded them to choose the subject, I believe I could have a positive impact ensuring the society runs smoothly.

Aims

My main aims would be to listen to peers and take queries to society leadership, to ultimately find a way to solve issues, to organise a cohesive and attractive offer holders' event to convince prospective students to pursue their study at UCL, and ultimately to support the team and its members by providing a space in which people feel comfortable.

Therefore, I would provide the greatest level of outreach as possible, as I think it is important that every student has access to such spaces, and I am keen to participate in reaching the collective aim; to encourage more students to explore geography and the wider world through discussions and events.
