As a Burmese-Chinese student, I know the importance of creating a sense of community among Asian students and embracing different cultural identities. Especially as 1 of only 3 Burmese students in UCL's entire first year, I want to make sure everyone feels welcome and hope to connect with students from more unique backgrounds. As the Social Secretary, I would like to provide current and new members with the same sense of community that I felt when I joined ASN.
I particularly want to run for Social Secretary, as it aligns with my past leadership experiences in high school. I have organized and led events and collaborated with others. For instance, I was involved in organizing a basketball fundraiser in my school's National Honor Society, collaborating with over 10 other international schools, and raising over $500 net. This contributes to making me an ideal candidate for Social Secretary, as I will have no problem collaborating with other leaders, reaching out to other societies, booking venues, and organizing event itineraries. I was also a leader in non-profit organizations outside my school, meaning I have experience in working with individuals I have never met before, which will help when reaching out to new members and building a diverse society.
My past leadership experience and commitment to inclusivity make me a good fit for the role, and if elected, I will work hard to create a vibrant community that celebrates Asian culture. Thank you for considering my candidacy!
When I first entered UCL, I was very overwhelmed with how to meet new people. Especially those that came from a similar background to me.
Fortunately, Asian Social Network really helped ease into the process of meeting new people, with really interesting activities with people who otherwise would not have met.
Therefore, I would like to run for a Leadership role inorder to continue this society by providing more interaction with a wider range of societies, as well as hosting more activities online. Furthermore, I wish to involve more cuisine orientated sessions as that is one of the most sharable and interesting aspect of pan-Asian culture.
I really appreciate the current ASN committee for running a great society and I hope I can help maintain and improve the friendliness and growth of the society.
hey guys! i'm franz and i am a second-year philosophy student. you'll see me two times on here quite simply because i have enjoyed being a part of the asian social network, and it would be my pleasure to make it as enjoyable (if not more) for current and incoming ucl students in any way i can!
if elected as social secretary, i aim to plan and organise several events and activities to ensure everyone can make their time at ucl memorable.
it was through the asian social network that i have been able to meet the people who are now my closest friends and this is something i want fellow students to share in as a result of being part of the network.
i aspire to maintain the positive environment that the society has already propagated through a number of different events, such as the scavenger hunt and games night (my all-time favourite).
as it is the asian social network, i will naturally also aim to maintain and continually ensure all asian communities of ucl feel represented and respected, again through collaborations with other cultural societies and dedicating certain events to celebrating other cultures (and other similar activities).
again, it would be my pleasure to be a part of the team and continue the efforts of our current committee - take care :)
Hi, I'm Anika! I'm from Hong Kong, and since moving here, I've felt more in touch with my culture and found a sense of community that I've never experienced before with other asian students. A massive part of me feeling such a sense of belonging was the warm welcome that people at asian social network events gave me, which was amazing to feel when I felt so disoriented with everything else in my surroundings - after moving halfway across the world and being in a uni full of strangers, still being able to connect with people through our shared culture is such a comforting feeling.
This is why I would love to be a part of the committee next year, so I can help new and continued members alike experience this same sense of community! I really enjoyed the collaborations with other societies this year, so I'd love to continue those, and I also think it would be fun to host friendly competitions such as dumpling wrapping contests or pub quizzes, as well as the usual chill events. I'm also open to suggestions for events, so if anyone has ideas, feel free to contact me anytime and I'll make it happen! As your potential social secretary next year, I'll make sure to keep this society as a fun, welcoming place where members can embrace and share their culture and make friends all at once.
