Mary Connolly

Hello everyone! My name is Mary and I am a 1st year Information Management for Business student running for General Secretary. I had a great time being part of ABACUS this year and I am excited to contribute to upholding its traditions, reputation, and enhancing the overall ABACUS experience :)

I held multiple leadership roles in the past, and I have experience in organizing and promoting numerous schoolwide and interschool events, which equipped me with skills that I can implement. My course has also taught me concepts in UX/UI design which I can put into use through this position!

Furthermore, as the current General Secretary’s Abacus child, I had an insight into this role. ABACUS primarily communicates to members through social media such as Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. By creating consistent and engaging content, I plan to optimize these channels. Some ideas I have are: monthly calendar posts on future events, posts on event ticket sales, and recap posts. These would allow all members regardless of their commitments to be well informed of our society’s events, maximise participation, and attract prospective members.

ABACUS has brought me into an exciting new community. I hope to contribute to the creation of a society that enriches your university life as much as it has enriched mine. I look forward to the opportunity of serving you as your General Secretary. See you all at the events!!

Kelly L Cheng

My name is Kelly, I’m from Hong Kong/ Taiwan and I’m standing for general secretary this year :)

Having taken part in various abacus events, I’ve made incredible connections with similar backgrounds and interests. This inspired me to do the same for more people at ucl.

Social media plays a crucial role in making abacus one of the largest cultural societies. I believe my previous experience of running the German society at school would enable me to excel in this role. I promoted the society through social media platforms, resulting in an addition of 40 new members in the span of 2 months. Furthermore, as the president of the green school committee during my school years, I’ve acquired organisation and effective time management skills, which are essential for general secretary.

In the future, I hope to increase abacus’ visibility, engagement and participation. I aim to create content and provide frequent updates to improve communication between all members. I’ll respond to enquiries and listen to member’s needs, fostering a sense of community and encouraging participation in social events and activities. As a management science student, I’m also motivated to use my digital design and marketing skills to further accelerate abacus’ social media presence.

Abacus is a welcoming society making students feel at home even in a foreign country. I look forward to seeing what the upcoming year has in store as your general secretary and working with each and every one of you!
