Yinyi Yeung

Hi guys, I’m Yinyi and I’m interested in running for Events Director this year! This past year, I have been able to meet so many different people through Abacus events and make some lifelong friends. I am excited about the opportunity to serve in this role as it would allow me to bring new ideas to the table as well as work with others in a group to provide the best experiences for you guys!

Being in boarding school, I have had the opportunity to arrange boarders’ dinners for celebrations like Chinese New Year which taught me the skill of communicating with restaurants as well as venues. Working to run a fashion show for charity in high school as well, I learned to manage ticket sales and event planning. These experiences in planning and management will be a valuable asset to the role and working with others, especially from different universities as well.

I’m also interested in organizing more events in addition to the existing ones so that everyone can meet new friends and feel included in the society. As events director, I would like to focus on creating events that cater to the diverse interests of our members, allowing their ideas to be heard and bringing them to life! I am committed to maintaining and building on the welcoming and inclusive environment of the society through this role. Next year, I will do my best to work alongside the rest of the committee to create unforgettable events that will bring us all closer together!

Lia Jorge

Moving to an entirely different country miles away from home was definitely a culture shock and an extremely difficult process. But thanks to Abacus I was able to find a community of people who openly expressed their different cultures. I was surprised to see the similarities in culture even though I grew up miles away, and am extremely grateful for the friends I was able to meet.

As an International student from the Philippines, I believe I can provide a new perspective to the Abacus committee and help create a stronger and more inclusive community as a result. I can play a supportive role in helping freshers settle in, especially with our large population of International students. I have held various leadership positions in the past and was Head Girl for over four years in secondary school. This gave me the responsibility of hosting and organising events, as well as being a leader that people could look up too.

The responsibility of events director is a big one and I truly believe that I am extremely capable of creating, hosting, and organising events that will bring people together (with a bottle of vodka). Call me the new Gatsby if you’d like. I am also excited to be able to introduce the society’s members to more food and dining socials, games nights, culture nights.

As events director, I’ll be sure to give you more nights you can’t remember and I’ll be with you through all the tequila shots!

Joyce Huang

Hi I’m Joyce from Hong Kong, a first year Biomedical Science student! I believe that social events are a great way to bring people together and create a sense of community. As the Event Director, I will organise diverse events for our members. I am excited to collaborate with other members to create memorable experiences that everyone can enjoy.

I have experience in event management from organising school social events, including a Halloween party that received positive feedback. I planned and coordinated the decorations, food, and activities to ensure that everyone had an enjoyable experience. I have also organised a formal dinner for 300+ students, which involved arranging for catering and seating plan, and coordinating with multiple performers. This experience has equipped me with the skills necessary to execute large-scale events, and I am excited to apply this knowledge to ABACUS.

As the President of the dance team at my old school, I organised a dance show and led team practise, which improved my communication and leadership abilities.

In addition, I enjoy interacting with others. I believe that this quality will enable me to connect with members and make them feel comfortable during events. As the Event Director, I will strive to create an inclusive environment for all members.

With my experience in event planning and team management, I am confident in my ability to bring exciting and engaging social events to ABACUS as the Event Director!
