Engineering Society: Vice President

Hi, I am Jocelyn. Some of you may already know me from our course or other societies, but for those of you who don't, I am a second-year doing chemical engineering. 

Engineering society has been a huge part of my study this year. The range of events offered was phenomenal and extremely useful. I regret not having taken part in the society more often as a first-year. However, I would like to be given a chance to serve my fellow engineering student next year as a committee. I would be dedicated to making events more advertised and organizing even more career-oriented events to help everyone figure out their passion and option as an engineer.

Being part of something bigger than yourself genuinely makes the work you do more meaningful, and being part of the UCLES made me realise just that. As Vice-President of UCLES, I feel it’s my time to take it to the next level. I want to build on the solid foundation set by past committee members while still re-inventing parts of the society for a new set of UCL Engineers.

First off, being an FYR at UCLES was an enriching experience. From leading the mentorship program to organising engineering week, every experience at UCLES enhanced my knowledge and experience. I gained an insight into the operations of the society, and I believe I’d be the best candidate to guide this society forward.

This year I have numerous goals for our society, a few I want to prioritise are 

• Bi-Monthly hackathons and weekly challenges, each with cash prizes; emphasising academic challenge.
• Monthly socials, bar nights, pub crawls, allowing our students to have opportunities to socialise among one another.
• Student led engineering projects, focusing on real-life problems.
• Industry talks from top companies enabling our students to gain unique insight into industry.

My vision for UCLES is to be a place where students can be a part of something larger than themselves, where they’ll benefit academically, meet like minded students, and challenge themselves while enjoying the process.

Hi, I'm Hahn, and I'm running for Vice President of UCLES!

In last year's manifesto, I introduced myself as “an engineering student and passionate badminton, pool, and league of legends player”. Much of that remains the same today, only this year, I carry with me the experiences - both the successes celebrated, and the setbacks endured and overcome -  as the Events Director of UCLES. I'm immensely grateful for everything we've achieved and shared this year - whether it's planning exciting engineering events with an amazing team, or simply sharing a laugh with new people I meet at movie nights or picnics - these are moments I will cherish for a lifetime.

This year, I'm applying for Vice President because I'm confident that my experience, insight, and passion will help take UCLES to new heights in the coming year. My goals are as follows:

1. Expand on the mentorship program by adding academic mentorship and strengthening careers mentorship with help from industry partners.
2. Deliver large speaker conferences with representatives across a diverse range of engineering backgrounds.
3. Build and develop partnerships with societies and organizations both within and outside UCL.
4. Provide more opportunities for inter-departmental socials that bring together faculty and students.

Being a part of UCLES has been an absolute pleasure, and I hope to extend my journey here and continue to serve our community as the vice president in the coming year!

In the past year, UCLES has already introduced key initiatives to provide students the opportunities for further learning and career development outside of their degree. I believe I can expand these initiatives further in the coming year by fostering a culture in which students can enrich their learning and enhance their university experience through collaborative networking.

In my role as First Year Representative responsible for organising the Engineering Week, I was able to reach out to over 30 companies for the career fair, insightful talks & social events and collaborate with alumni and peers for making the Engineering Week, being held for the first time by UCLES, a success. I believe I have the experience as well as the leadership and interpersonal skills to assist in expanding the visibility of the society across industries and promoting strong inter-society connections within UCL and with universities across the UK.
