Ines Kenny Rubiera

When I joined BJJ society in October, I was so grateful for how open and welcoming the society was. Despite being a complete beginner, training sessions felt safe and un-intimidating, and I was immediately told where I could turn if this ever stopped being the case.

I would love to contribute to maintaining this friendly environment at BJJ, and believe that this should be the priority of a Welfare Officer. The role requires a nuanced and sensitive approach due to the physical (and let's just admit, weird) nature of the sport, which I believe I can take whilst maintaining the competitive and playful side that we are all there for. My experience as a woman training with guys gives me particular insight into what it is that ensures that BJJ maintains respectful and safe for all parties involved, and I'm eager to learn from others' experiences too.

In the months that I have been part of this society, I hope I have established myself as a friendly face that anyone could come to with their concerns (a campaign shamelessly run mostly via the whatsapp groupchat). It would be a great opportunity for me to give back to a society that has welcomed me with open arms from the beginning.

Vote me for Welfare officer and you will fare well in your BJJ endeavours (Ts&Cs apply)
