Chin Pok (Jasmine) Chau

My name is Jasmine and I'm in my first year of medicine. I've played badminton socially since the age of 6 and have also played in school teams for 10 years. I've had an amazing time playing in the women's and mixed team this year and have also learned a bit about the role of a captain in terms of booking courts, arranging matches but also taking care of everyone on the team. I would love the opportunity to do all of this in the next academic year, whilst getting to know all our current and future team members (both medics and non-medics) a little better!

Many of our RUMS badminton team members, including myself, are relatively inexperienced in playing mixed games compared to just men's or women's doubles, so I feel this is an area where we could all improve hugely next year. I would propose more time for mixed practice in our schedule, as well as increasing the constancy of partners to improve the chemistry and camaraderie between us, and would also welcome any feedback throughout the year. I am really excited to see how far our team goes next year!

Through serving as mixed captain, I also hope to strengthen certain skills such as communication, teamwork, leadership and problem-solving. But most importantly, I'd like to help every team member get stronger and enjoy themselves in every game!

Sihan Yu

After seeing the team perform this year, I believe the mixed team has a lot of potential and I would really like to have the opportunity to bring it up another level next year. I want to make this possible through creating more opportunities for practice outside of the once a fortnight training session. Practice currently consists mostly of matches. To improve the level of the mixed team, I would like to introduce more fundemental shot and footwork practice sessions in addition to matches for a more well-rounded training schedule.

Raavi Sharma

Hi, I would love to be a mixed team captain! I love playing badminton and have represented my county and played in national tournaments for the last 6 years. Also, being a member of the mixed team and attending social sessions this year has taught me that developing skills whilst having fun is the best way to learn and I aim to keep this as my aim for next year. As a captain I hope to make sessions enjoyable but also in aim to improve technique and tactics. I also think badminton is great way to make friends, improve fitness and teamwork or to just have a go! I would love to see the team and also social players progress further whilst being in a captain role. Also, I will bring sweets and snacks to matches because I believe reward based learning is effective. I want to make sure everyone enjoys being a RUMS badminton member so hope to arrange many mixed team events, such as meals and nights out as it’s a great opportunity for the women and men’s teams to socialise off court!

I think badminton is great in both a social, team and competitive setting and I would love to promote more students to participate so they can share the same love too.
