I have spent the last year at AI society engaging in tutorials both in the audience and as a speaker. I believe that AI tutorials have tremendous potential and are one of the greatest parts of society, allowing both newcomers to be introduced to AI and veterans to stay in touch with all parts of the ML discipline. My goal as the head of tutorials would be to work on improving tutorials even further. For example, I want to reduce the drop-out of participants who have no CS experience by refining the onboarding process and making the first few lectures easier to understand. Building upon that, my overall mission would be to increase engagement in tutorials and thus help to spread a practical knowledge of AI within the UCL community. There are numerous students who are interested or even fascinated by the idea of AI but who have no actual experience of what Machine Learning entails. Tutorials should, therefore, function as a bridge between theoretical and applied artificial intelligence. Among the several steps to achieve that, I would highlight, for example, the restructuring of Kaggle challenges so that more people have an opportunity to compete in them. In conclusion, I believe that tutorials are the backbone of the AI society and the community around it, and if they become more accommodating through the changes I suggested above, the whole society will be strengthened as a result.
