Hi my name is Chinenye (Chi) and I’m a first year Chemical Engineering Student! During my first and current year, UCL’s and the whole of UoL’s Afro-Caribbean Society has acted as a comforting and welcoming space for me; I would like to express this same support to the incoming freshers, as well as my elder peers too. I intend to ensure ACS is an inclusive and engaging environment, no matter your race/ethnicity, faith, sexuality or gender identity; with increased focus on the wellbeing, heritage, and support of our members. I’ll aim to achieve this through working in conjunction with the various officers to provide events and the adequate support, which caters to every corner within the ACS.

My Aims:

-To be an active support system and set an unforgettable example for ACS executives as well as our wider community

-To help create events to raise awareness about mental health in the African and Caribbean communities

-To ensure all cultures and traditions across the African and Caribbean diaspora are represented at all events

As the UCL ACS Vice President, I am confident that I can continue the impressive legacy left by the previous VP’s, as well as elevating ACS through my own attempts.

University life is not easy; from being chased by endless deadlines, to eating Indomie for the hundredth time in a week. Yet in the midst of the struggles that seem to characterise the experience at UCL, I have found an overwhelming sense of home within the Afro-Caribbean Society. 

Indeed if life at UCL is a plate of rice, the ACS would be the seasoning. Thus my overall goal as Vice-President is to keep the spirit of flavour alive (but with a personal twist on the recipe). Many would have heard my violin rendition of Michael Jackson, performed at the ACS Culture Jam; take this as testament to the fact that I interpret not only music, but life, with a different kind of sauce. 

I dream to see an ACS which balances endless enjoyment and laughter, with an environment to seek advice relating to well-being and careers. 

My desire to serve as Vice-President is coupled with a plethora of relevant experience. Having been the president of the law society at sixth-form, I am well acquainted with the sacrifices that accompany leadership. As a pro-bono legal volunteer, I developed a passion for widening outreach and working with younger students.

My 3-F plan: 

  • Family: Creating an inter-yeargroup network of mentorship and friendship
  • Fun: Booking the best venues, DJs, and food for when it's time to turn it up!
  • Future: Allowing members to realise full potential in careers and creative talents

Kalki Mengesha

Hey everyone! My name's Kalki, I'm a first-year studying Medicine and I'm running for ACS Vice-president this year. 

Our ACS has always done a good job of bringing us together and helping us celebrate our cultures. As Vice President, I'd aim to widen the ACS's reach and bring new ideas that can be implemented to strengthen our society. From introducing more intercollegiate events, supporting charities that help our communities and strengthening the families programme, I believe there is plenty we can do to improve our already thriving ACS. 

As we're nearing the end of the pandemic, I believe it's time for us to revive every aspect of our society, be it academic, vocational or social so that our members can grow as people and leave UCL with memorable experiences and lifelong friends. Having been both a Head Girl and a Prefect, I am well experienced in being an effective leader as well as an involved team member and if elected, will endeavour to work with the rest of the committee to allow our ACS to reach its full potential. 

I will aim to....

  • Increasing our social media presence to attract new members and keep existing members in the know about what’s going on.
  • Introducing more UoL events to promote better networking, provide larger-scale events and strengthen the community by increasing diversity.
  • Revamping the ACS families programme to provide one-to-one pairings to help freshers settle into UCL more easily.
