Azhaar Ahmed

Salaam everyone! I’m Azhaar and I’m running to be your SJP Welfare Officer for the upcoming academic year!

During this past year, I had the amazing opportunity to serve as a fresher rep for SJP. It was truly a privilege that allowed me to channel my passion for the Palestinian cause and actively participate in transformative change and meaningful activism!

As rewarding as this role was, it has given me an insight into how activism burnout is a very real and pressing issue, both for myself and many members of this society. With the generational trauma that so many have faced, it is vital that compassion is a core tenet of our activism movement. In order to do so, I plan to build upon the momentum we’ve had this year in workshops such as Tatreez, which allow us to practice mindfulness within Palestinian activism itself, as the two should never be mutually exclusive!

As your Welfare Officer for the upcoming year, I plan to organise additional workshops like this and conduct regular welfare check-ins. My aim is to create a secure and empathetic atmosphere for individuals who are actively supporting the Palestinian cause on campus.

I hope to bring forth the skills I've gained from being a fresher rep and work with the SJP committee to shed even more light on the Palestinian cause.
