I owe so much of my first year experience at UCL to the live music society. I’ve grown as a musician and as a person with the lively socials and gigs. After watching the current tech officers at the numerous gigs I think it’s something I’d really love to try.

As tech officer, I will make sure to be available for gigs, consistently communicate with the musicians and provide any equipment or support they need (I’m painfully aware that the second amp in SPR is awful and hope to persuade Mr Priest to fund a replacement). Most of my tech knowledge is guitar centric as it is my main instrument. However, I’m taking action to learn by assisting the current tech officers for third term gigs and will be absorbing as much knowledge from them as possible.

Furthermore, I think many musicians nowadays would benefit from a deeper understanding of the tech and production side of music. Lots of successful musicians have risen to fame by producing their art independently, so it would be a missed opportunity not to learn. To encourage wider learning, I would like to introduce more workshops and also create ‘behind the scenes’ footage of Rhapsody and other gigs (maybe collaborating with the film society). Music has a tendency to be elitist so I feel it’s important for the workshops to have a supportive and encouraging environment.

Thanks so much for reading all of this and, if you aren’t already, come to the jams every week!
