As a Director of Social Events, I’m keen on introducing a wider and more collaborative variety of
activities across the German Society. By joining UCL for three years as
a PhD student, I believe I could play a valuable role within the German committee.
Whilst maintaining classic events such as the Stammtisch, Karneval, and
Oktoberfest, I’m eager to widen these events in conjunction with other German societies (LSE, KCL, ICL, etc.)
For the next academic year, my initial plans within the German society would include visits to
the Hammerton Brewery and pub nights at, e.g. the Beehive, Bounce, Electric Shuffle, or The Bermondsey Bierkeller
(to mention but a few), or picnics at Regent’s Park in the summer. Events like
these would offer additional and enjoyable opportunities to become involved in the society,
particularly on a casual basis. Within university grounds, monthly film screenings of canonical German
films could also be introduced in the future; particularly as a film student myself. Furthermore,
influenced by the popular ‘European Night’ during my time at Oxford, the idea of hosting formal soirées or dinners with other German societies may also be an exciting event going forward - a social experience I would be
delighted to delegate.
Ultimately, within this role, I would love to take these traditions and adapt them to UCL’s exciting
environment in the heart of London— a setting that lends itself to a manifold of memorable and sociable
networking events.
