Candidates

Aarohi Vira

I would love the opportunity to represent all of filmsoc's drama productions for the next year - I have enjoyed taking advantage of all the opportunities that filmsoc has offered over the past year and as a film studies student I am always looking for more opportunities to get involved with making films. Having had the privilege of working on the student films made this year, I have loved meeting everyone involved and working alongside such an enthusiastic and talented team, and I would be so excited to be able to continue working with everyone at this wonderful society. I really enjoy taking leadership roles whenever possible; I feel very comfortable in them, but also always welcome the opportunity to gain more confidence and experience by working in a new challenging position. I am really interested in writing and directing, and have already written both a feature-length and a short film screenplay for various projects, and I am always excited to work on new creative ideas, whether my own or just helping someone else's; I love being a part of the idea force behind a story and would love to be involved in seeing other people realise their own projects and ideas. I love working with a larger group of people and seeing how people's creativity and different viewpoints can come together to make something really special, and I would consider it such a huge privilege to be able to work with all of the passionate and talented people in this society.

Ollie Pitman

Dear FilmSoc Members,

My name is Ollie and I am a second year psychology student.

Having worked in a wide variety of roles, from runner to director (and fly wrangler), since my time at UCL, I have enormous respect for anyone who gets involved in the film society. Whether it’s someone’s first time being involved in a short film, or full time inhabitant of the film studio, I have a good understanding of the vital role that each person plays and wholeheartedly value the importance of camaraderie within the crew.

As Drama Producer, I would make inclusivity a priority, aiming to create a friendly atmosphere on sets where people can meet other film enthusiasts and learn from each other, whilst collaborating to make brilliant short films.

In my first year of Uni, I directed the term two film “Lasagne”, which we accelerated through post production in time to be screened at the Bloomsbury Theatre for FOMI. Not only was the film a blast to work on, but we were able to produce a polished final product in a relatively short space of time. It has often been the case that term films lose momentum after filming wraps, and there is a large delay before the film gets completed in the editing room. I can promise that I would make every possible effort to have three completed short films, ready to be screened, by the end of the year.

It would be a genuine honour to be the Drama Producer next year. I look forward to meeting new members, making films, and having a great time doing it!

Harry Bramley

As someone who has been a film society member for the past year and has struggled to get as involved as I wanted I thought if I ran as drama producer I could do more to help others get more involved.

I haven't really got anything else to say, so I don't want to waste any more of your time, but a vote would be appreciated.

Charlie McDonald

Hey everyone! I'm Charlie and I’m hoping to be your Drama Producer. I would absolutely love to oversee and facilitate next year’s fiction productions and believe I have the right experience and skills required to do this role well. While I won’t pretend to be an omniscient expert, I do have a fair bit of experience working as or with producers so I know that organisation, versatility and an in-depth understanding of every stage of production is essential to this role. Previously, I’ve worked on feature films as a production assistant, working closely with producers during the pre-production stages as well as for the duration of the filming, and have some experience working with post-production coordinators as well. I want to use my skills and experience to help everyone in the society continue to create and distribute some supreme quality projects and have a great time while doing so. As those who know me can confirm, I’m a chronic people pleaser (it’s an issue but not a problem) so I will be putting all the time and effort humanly possibly into this role and into helping you all make the best possible projects.

Some things I want to do with this role are:

  • To create a close, fun and professional environment on the set. The vibe and relationships on set are what truly make or break a filming experience, and of course we all want to have the greatest time (while also getting things finished on time). I will organise socials and screenings to facilitate a strong sense of community and friendship on each project. I
Ella Barker

Hello! If you don’t know me already, my name is Ella. I am currently a 2nd year who is studying English BA, and I have spent the past year as President of The English Society, whilst also getting to know all of the wonderful Film Society Members and taking part in events.

As The President of English Society, I have learnt that one of the most important qualities of a leader is approachability.  As your Drama Producer, I would ensure that everyone has a chance for their ideas to be heard, regardless of who they are, or what their experience is. I would strive to continue the legacy of Film and TV Society’s brilliant Term Films, whilst further supporting students to develop ideas and make films both within and outside of the society. I want to encourage creativity, and build confidence in those who are new to the society/industry and don’t know where to start.

I have held leadership roles throughout my academic career, such as: House Drama Captain, Production Team Leader, and I was the Project Manager for two student businesses. With these roles, I learned how to: budget creative projects; manage large teams of students, and problem solve, whilst also forming friendships with some incredible people. It would be a true honour to have this role. The future team of 2023/24 is already looking incredible, and I would love to be a part of this team and to be able to help lead and organise future projects with the wonderful and talented community that is the Film and TV Society.

Samuel Davey-Newton

To encourage and facilitate the production of less linear, surrealist dramas that prioritise texture and atmosphere and aren't constrained by the need to produce marketable and digestible shorts. We have unlimited access to industry standard equipment and no brief or board of investors to satisfy, we should make WEIRD STUFF!!

:-)

Shengtong Deng

Hi, I'm Karl
If elected, I would aim to:
• Provide opportunities for everyone, fostering full participation.
• Create a pleasant, comfortable, and enjoyable atmosphere.
• Encourage and assist the production team in bold exploration and innovation, such as incorporating advanced AI technology into production or exploring unique themes.
• Secure more sponsorships and collaborations to ensure our production has robust commercial, technical, and logistical support.
• Promote facilitating affiliate projects, making every effort to provide a robust platform and help everyone tell their stories well.

From my perspective, the role of a drama producer requires a multitude of skills, including logistics and time management. In terms of logistics, my experience as the First Assistant Director at Broadcast Varsity has allowed me to develop relevant skills such as coordinating and communicating with various crew members. For instance, I ensured the crew's welfare and safety by creating call sheets, commute plans, and listing nearby restaurants and hospital. During shooting, I made sure that everyone understood their responsibilities and facilitated constant communication, leading to a comfortable, safe, and enjoyable working environment. Regarding time management, I will apply the project management skills learned from my course, such as creating a Work Breakdown Structure and conducting project monitoring to keep every step of a project on track. Additionally, fundraising and financial management are crucial, and I will
