Sam Brownstone

I'm Sam, a 2nd year maths with economics student.

During lockdown, I started writing stories to feel a little less stuck inside than I actually was. I never considered sharing anything I wrote outside of my own friend group, but after seeing how cool Era was, I asked myself what could possibly go wrong? and decided to submit a short story to the journal. It was an awesome feeling, and it showed me how important Era is: how many great artists (writers, musicians, critics, etc) would the world miss out on if publications like Era didn't exist to give people the confidence to share their work in the first place?

As Era treasurer, I would want to make sure that our president and editors have the support, resources, and platform that they need to make Era and its community more inclusive and of the highest possible quality.  And I don't just mean the prints. We're done with lockdown (knock on wood); let's find the budget to get more events going! Not just amazing print launches, but also live sets at club nights, gigs with London's up-and-coming musicians, and even just Era social events (quiz nights!).

I'm good with numbers, I'm organised, and I can make a mean spreadsheet. But what's more important than all of that, I think, is that I care about what Era stands for; what it means to me and so many UCL artists: past, present, and future. And I'll be there to support the rest of the team in pushing Era as far in its mission as possible before handing it off to our successors.
