Sci-Fi and Fantasy Society: Welfare Officer

I care passionately about this Society and would love to help it become as awesome as it can be. As Treasurer for the past year, I’m pleased to have played a part in many of our committee’s accomplishments. If elected as Welfare Officer, I’d continue to offer my time and effort in whatever way is required by the committee and society.

Additionally, I’m keen to more thoroughly engage with the remit of this role, as this is an area where I think we have room to improve. I’ve various plans for demographic specific activity, use of the Welfare Fund, potential collabs with Societies and networks and the like, which I’d help organize if given the opportunity.  Most importantly, I’d also endeavor to be approachable to all members with any welfare-related issues, and more generally dedicate myself to ensuring every member has the best possible experience in our Society.

Regardless of what happens, I love you all and I’m sure next year’s committee will do an amazing job 🙂. It’s been an honour serving on the committee and I look forward to attending more Society events next year. 

Sci-fi and fantasy society is one of the most inclusive societies out there. People from all cultures, ages, subjects, and backgrounds come together to rejoice in our mutual passion for sci-fi and fantasy culture, games and literature. But oftentimes, this broad mix can lead to struggles between members who may have trouble reconciling different beliefs, cultures or simple perspectives on life.

The reason I would be great for this position is first of all my regular attendance to the society! Since joining, I have actively participated at games night every Wednesday and have for that reason established a close connection with lots of members of the society. I hope this would give individuals who feel the need to reach out a motivation to come to me in private and discuss any issues in a confidential environment. 
Furthermore, having completed a mediation course during my school time has prepared me with skills of active listening and dispute resolution. This includes one-to-one discussions between members with issues amongst themselves, but also individual sessions similar to counselling (although I am not qualified for permanent sessions).

My proposals include a welfare discord account where individuals could contact me privately through the group chat and a termly welfare and inclusion form to check in on everyones wellbeing and make sure people know they can reach out if needed!
