Marc Venegas Grau

Hi I’m Marc a current second year looking to be your next NatSci President! As this year’s Events Officer, I’ve helped plan and attend every event throughout the year, giving me first-hand experience of what works well, what students enjoy, and where we can improve.

As President, my new main goals are:

  • To strengthen our relationship with the Natural Sciences department so we can collaborate on talks, panels and events like the annual departmental quiz.
  • More academic events, organised with the newly appointed Academic Officer (who I already personally know), focused on careers, internships and research.
  • A more inclusive social calendar, with more non-alcohol-focused, low pressure events so everyone feels welcome.

I’d also like to refresh the games available in the common room by introducing newer, more accessible games that are actually playable as I know they are quite old and confusing, helping make these events more welcoming and interactive.

I know how divisive the course can start to feel as we specialise more into our streams. To tackle this, I will introduce bi-weekly, casual “office hours” in the common room – a designated timeslot to just chill, ask questions, meet people from other streams, and build friendships across the cohort.

Most importantly, I want the society to be shaped by its members. I’ll always be open to suggestions so email me or message me on WhatsApp if you’d prefer something more chill and the committee and I will try tailor the society to your needs.

Yiyang Zhang

Hi everyone, I’m Yiyang, a 1st year on the Organic Chem + MCB stream, running to be your President. I believe the interdisciplinary nature of NatSci should be celebrated through inclusivity. With the stream split in Term 1, many people may not see their friends as often, so I want NatSci Soc to be a space where people can reconnect across streams while also meeting people from other STEM degrees.

Here are my goals for the society:

  • Improve STEM Ball quality by coordinating with STEM societies earlier to improve catering, logistics, and organisation.
  • Increase social events, from low-intensity socials like picnics and games nights to more external events such as themed sports night pub socials, and an improved annual Boat Party.
  • Develop NatSci Soc merch with the incoming VP, where I can use experience in Art to support graphics and design.
  • Collaborate with other STEM societies through joint socials and interdisciplinary academic talks.
  • Spotlight Women in STEM by working with the incoming WIS Soc President to host events celebrating women in our field.
  • Expand academic talks with topics such as biophysics and nanotechnology, including networking events.
  • Strengthen communication through Instagram and WhatsApp to improve engagement and promote events more effectively.

This memorable year has prepared me to dedicate myself to supporting our community. I hope to use my communication and leadership skills alongside a trusted committee to deliver enjoyable, high-quality experiences for you all.
