Medical Society: Widening Participation Officer

Hey!! I'm applying for this role because im really passionate about widening participation and helping students feel that medicine is a career they can achieve. 

As someone who understands how challenging and overwhelming the journey into medicine can sometimes feel, I’m able to relate to students and support them in a friendly way.

This past year I have volunteered with Suture The Future, which involved teaching Year 11 and sixth form students basic suturing skills in an engaging and supportive environment, helping build their confidence and interest in healthcare. 

I have also volunteered at the INUGSC widening participation conference for Year 13 students, where I enjoyed sharing my experiences, answering questions, and encouraging students throughout the application process. 

I’m enthusiastic about creating a positive and welcoming experience for aspiring medical students from all backgrounds!

As a first generation medical student from a widening participation background, I am passionate about improving access to Medicine for students who may not otherwise feel represented in the field. Having attended a state comprehensive school and state sixth form before joining UCL, I understand many of the barriers prospective applicants face. Over the past year, I have self-organised and delivered multiple outreach initiatives, including webinars, interview workshops, school talks, and free mentoring for aspiring medics, particularly toward WP and AccessUCL applicants. I delivered talks on the medicine application process, interview preparation, and building confidence as applicants from underrepresented backgrounds. Alongside this, I currently serve as a Target Medicine UCL mentor, supporting UCL Medical School’s own widening participation programme. These experiences have strengthened my communication, leadership, and organisational skills, while reinforcing my commitment to creating accessible, supportive, and impactful outreach initiatives within MedSoc.

I am applying for Widening Participation Officer because I believe access to medicine and success within medical school should never be limited by background, confidence, or connections. At UCLMS, how many students could benefit from stronger mentorship, better representation, or simply feeling that they belong? How many aspiring medics never see themselves reflected in this profession?

Through my involvement with Target Medicine, I have seen how guidance and representation can completely transform a student’s confidence and ambition. I want to bring that same impact to UCL MedSoc by creating opportunities that support both current medical students and prospective applicants from underrepresented backgrounds.

In this role, I would aim to:

• Strengthen outreach with local schools and WP programmes
• Create mentoring networks between senior and junior UCL medics
• Deliver application workshops on UCATs, interviews, and personal statements
• Collaborate with organisations such as Target Medicine to expand our reach

Medicine serves diverse communities; shouldn’t our medical school reflect that too?
