Hi, I am Ayca, an iBSc Surgical Sciences student. As your Research and Academic Medicine (RAM) Chair, I want to make research more accessible and engaging for medical students. I have been involved with medical research since the beginning, let it be summer research projects, systematic reviews or retrospective cohort studies. These experienced helped me build great connections and discover opportunities that I would love to help other students access as well.
As a member of the RAM subcommittee this year, I enjoyed organising talks and events to introduce students to research. I have also been part of the MedSoc Pre-clinical Education Subcommittee, where I helped organise tutorials. All of these have developed my organisational skills and motivated me to contribute more to MedSoc.
I want to help revive and grow the RAM Subcommittee by making it more active, engaging and accessible to students of all years. My plans for the upcoming year include:
- Organising a summer research opportunities seminar to introduce students to the opportunities available
- Introducing a “How to Get Involved in Research at Medical School” series, where senior students share their experiences and practical advice
- Developing a research skills course with sessions on topics such as systematic reviews, statistics and data analysis, poster presentations and oral presentations
- Continuing and expanding the iBSc Symposium, giving students the opportunity to showcase and celebrate their research
Thank you.
Hello!
Ideas:
- Hold the iBSc symposium before Christmas so that everyone who has completed year 3 is eligible to submit their work (and not just those who finished their dissertation the quickest) and to give year 2 students the opportunity to see research from various iBScs before making their choice
- Encourage patient engagement in research by introducing the "Medical Evidence and Public Engagement" prize which rewards medical students for excellent communication of research to the people most affected by it
I care deeply about the success of the Research and Academic Medicine subcommittee, so I hope that I am granted the privilege of making these things happen.
