Over the past year, being Welfare Officer for Armenian Society has become one of the most meaningful parts of my time at UCL. Through this role, I have realised just how important community, belonging and cultural connection can be - especially when living far from home. Culture is something deeply grounding: it connects us, comforts us and reminds us of who we are. This society has created friendships, support systems and a genuine sense of belonging for so many people, including myself, and I have loved helping create a space where people feel welcomed, included and genuinely cared for.
Throughout the year, I have tried to help create an environment where people feel comfortable approaching one another, making new friends and being themselves - whether through organising events, checking in on members or simply contributing to a positive atmosphere. One of my favourite moments this year was our “Bring Your Non-Armenian Friend” event, which was such a meaningful success and brought together people from different backgrounds in a really welcoming way. I would love to continue creating more events like this in the future, including collaborations with other societies and initiatives that make Armenian Society feel even more open, connected and inclusive.
If re-elected, I would love to continue building on what we have created this year and ensure that Armenian Society remains a space where every person feels accepted, valued and at home.
