Hi, I’m Yvette Cheng, a second-year Civil Engineering student, and I’m applying to be Welfare Officer because I care deeply about the wellbeing of the people behind the ideas. TEDx is an intense, creative, and high-pressure space—and I want to help build a team culture where people feel supported, not just productive.
I’ve worked as a private tutor for three years, run a food business, and worked as a private chef—roles that taught me to stay calm under pressure, support others one-on-one, and lead with empathy. I’m fluent in Mandarin and English, and I’ve worked with people from many backgrounds. I’m also a strong team player who genuinely enjoys helping others thrive.
I have a background in competitive debate, so I understand the emotional and mental energy that goes into preparing talks and events. I also completed the Technical Journalism course by Dr. Sunny Bains, which deepened my interest in thoughtful communication and representation.
As Welfare Officer, I’ll create space for open check-ins, advocate for healthy pacing and boundaries, and work to ensure everyone—on or off stage—feels safe, heard, and cared for. I’m here not to lead loudly, but to support consistently.
TEDx is about powerful ideas—but none of them happen without people. I’ll focus on the people.
