The UCL Review Society: Editor

I am an MA Publishing student specifically training to become an editor/copy-editor for academic publications, especially academic journals (of all disciplines). I am already gaining experience by editing for Delilah Mag (music) and Kinesis (science)—I am even more excited to support the academic achievements of my soon-to-be-published peers! I am committed to the field of editing and thus willing to put a lot of effort and research into my work for the Review, as I am eager to hone my skills and become industry-ready.

I studied philosophy for my undergraduate degree, which equipped me with a sharp attention to detail and wording, key qualities for an aspiring editor. In philosophy, every term, every phrasing counts: choosing and defining the correct terminology can make or break an argument. This made me especially attuned to nuances in vocabulary, spelling and overall structure. I have fast and accurate reading skills, as well as a clear and rigorous writing style which allows me to vulgarize complex notions and adapt to all audiences. In editing, it matters to be excited to work with a variety of subjects, to identify key points and problems within them, and make them resonate to their full potential.

Ever since I picked up my first Nature journal in my hometown library, I've been constantly amazed by the amount of work that goes into delivering someone's months or years’ worth of ideas and thoughts into this concise form that can be shared and discussed among thousands of other passionate scientists. How each line is valued for its correctness and ease of understanding; every figure that needs to be created and made accessible to the readers; each finding that needs to go through a rigorous peer-review process of other experts in the field.

For a long time, I have been passionate about this process, and I would be delighted to be a closer part of it. I believe the position of an Editor for the UCL Review Journal would allow me to delve deeper into how good science is made and published. My previous experiences of scientific communication, be it at poster presentations or just regular lab meetings, offer me a good grounding in understanding of how to make a scientific idea available to as many people as possible. This I would like to achieve by dedicating my efforts to assure each submission is properly assessed and receives adequate peer reviewing and support to deliver its message in the best form possible. I am looking forward to working with my colleagues to supervise every step of the publishing process to make good science, together.

Hi everyone! My name is Hannah Khairaz and I am a second year Biomedical Science student. If elected Editor, I would be committed to ensuring journal publications are relevant, current, contain high-quality content and present contributions from a diverse array of fields.

I will ensure improvement in the quality of communication, while presenting information which is engaging, accurate and clear. I have worked with Health-tech companies as a medical writer, communicating scientific and clinical data to educate and motivate the public about current advancements in medicine and well-being. I personally enjoy reading and analysing articles, exercise good judgement and tend to question assumptions and theories, making me a compelling candidate.

I believe having a platform where academics and students can exchange ideas/ research, gain access to different academic resources, foster new skills and support each other's growth and development is important. If elected editor, I will be committed to ensuring information presented is accurate, clear, and engaging, in order to effectively increase reader satisfaction.
