I eat sleep and breathe debate, my middle name is debate I am going to legally change my first name to Deb. I came out of the womb with POI’s and rebuttals.
Unfortunately this is not true.
I have never done debate before; I didn’t even know what British Parliamentary debate was until I joined the society, but I think that makes me perfect for the role. I am a first year English student and enjoy the craft of opinion, of understanding and picking apart aspects of arguments.
Despite my lack of knowledge I immediately felt a sense of community. Debate creates this society of open-minded people that should be welcoming and inclusive for all: I have found great enjoyment in it and want every first year to experience the same. Everyone should be given the opportunity to have a say in the society and raise any concerns they may have, no matter their ability or years present.
As a person who has always gone to state schools, the world of BP debate never really existed to me, so the prospect of it is exciting and something I very much want to be a part of in the years to come.
I have been to a novice competition already and wasn’t the most successful but I found it really interesting and I want to get better. I understand what it’s like to be new and don’t want anyone to be put off by the stature and grandiosity of debate. It doesn’t matter that I wasn’t very good because I had fun and learnt more, and as first year representative I want people to feel like this society is the kind of place to grow and enjoy.
As a
I know most of the novices/first years and they know me. I have a years captainship under my belt from previous schools and an entire years coaching experience. I believe I have the knowledge and accessibility to bridge the gap between committee-novices and the social mobility to voice concern, questions and general sentiment of the first year debate body
My goal as first-year rep is to make debate accessible for both novices and veterans in their first year of uni. I believe new debaters who want to move into competitive should receive just as much training and help as veteran debaters. Debate is an event dominated by people who've been in the sport for years, and I want to change that and make attending debate training and tournaments less intimidating for new debaters. My past experience includes debating and working as a debate coach for all of high school and breaking at the Tournament of Champions in the US. Hi Christian.
Hi everybody!
My name is Marc, I am 19 years old, from Germany and France, and a first-year Politics and International Relations student. You might have noticed me during the trainings, I am the tall guy with red hair.
I am applying to be a first-year representative because I really enjoy doing organisational work and shaping the environment I am finding myself in. I am new to debating and just started here at UCL but I already feel like it is a great activity I would love to continue engaging and improving in. As a first-year representative, I want to offer every of us first-year students a voice and a possibility to be heard, as we all know that settling into university can be quite an overwhelming experience.
I was already involved in representing my friends and classmates all throughout high school, as I volunteered as a student representative, member of the school council and chairman of my school’s student rowing club. Here at UCL I am also involved as my course's student representative. I really enjoy taking up those extracurricular engagements and being part of a vibrant community, all while representing the needs of my peers.
Transparency and honesty are characteristics that I value a lot, so having an open ear for any of you guys’ issues and communicating honestly about things that are going on are things you can definitely expect from me.
If you think that I might be the right one for this job, I would gladly appreciate your vote.
Cheers
Marc
