I am a first-year in Global Humanitarian Studies BSc and MSF is one of the humanitarian actors we learn about early in the course. Trying to be a model humanitarian, I would love to stay neutral, independent and impartial but I admire MSFs principle of témoignage in addition to their mission in providing aid and healthcare. Just recently, I visited the pop-up exhibition in London 3 times and took different people each time to appreciate their work and write letters in support of patients in Jordan - this is just to illustrate how moving I find their work and my own commitment outside of academics and society activities to promote their projects and awareness of them as an organisation.
This role would never feel like work to me and I would enjoy representing first years and getting more of us involved. I always loved representation roles through secondary school and would be grateful to have one for a cause I deeply care about. Having a foot in the door of learning about humanitarian work but also being open to other routes such as medicine or logistics, I feel allows me to relate to both medics and non-medics in this society. I may not know exactly what path I want to take in the future, but I feel a strong connection to MSF’s mission and values. I want to be part of the Friends of MSF Committee to organise fundraisers, mindfulness breaks and events for everyone to enjoy from cupcake decorating to pub crawls and career help, while learning and growing alongside them.
