Hello everyone, my name is Jay, and I’m a second-year debater.
This time last year, I was a nobody — bottom of the tab at my first tournaments, too scared to even sign up for weekly sessions as anything more than a spectator. But over the past year, things changed. I’ve gone to over 30 tournaments, spent more weekends debating than not, and on weekdays, tried every drill I could find just to get a little bit better, even if it meant sacrificing a bit too much of my first year.
If I’m elected as Training Officer, the one thing you can count on is that I’ll be dedicated, passionate, and understanding. Because I know firsthand that debate can feel hard, scary, and intimidating, especially when you’re just starting out.
That’s why I want to focus on building confidence and fundamentals:
• Running an argument to its fullest potential, which is especially important as it teaches you how to catch what your opening has missed
• Hosting ProAms, where experienced debaters partner with first-years to guide their thinking.
• Running motion and speech breakdowns, where we dissect strategies behind each word in the motion, and how world-class speeches are structured.
• Teaching you how to improve in your own time if you are willing to dedicate a small slice of your day everyday
Most importantly, I want to give back to this community that gave me everything — the confidence, skills, friends, and open breaks that will last a lifetime
