Being a fresher is quite intimidating and making friends is one of the scariest parts. Joining different societies, especially the stage crew society, has helped me to meet new people with similar interests and gain new skills. I have always loved productions and stage crew has given me the to opportunity to advance my skills in stage management, whilst having fun with friends. I want to give back to this society by being freshers’ representative, where I would be able to listen to my fellow freshers and communicate their questions and concerns, so we could address it as a committee. I was a prefect at my high school for 2 years, where I attended meetings each week to come up with solutions to various problems and to help plan events, so I have experience in a similar role to this. Being freshers’ rep would also allow me to meet and talk to more freshers in this society that I haven’t yet and I could help guide people with applying to roles in different ucl productions and working on these shows too.

I love the gantry.

I had a decent amount of experience working backstage before I came to UCL.

One month into UCL I have done the following:

  • bought my membership (instantly), and met the committee
  • Got Audiovisual Operator for Shrek the musical
  • Helped on Sound operation at the 24hr Dance Society show
  • Got Lead Lighting Designer for Be More Chill
  • Nearly got Student Trustee (not relevant to stage crew but shows my activity in SU politics)

I think I'm at least a little involved.

I have said from the start that Stage Crew is my No. 1 priority.

Now let me represent my year.

Rania Harryanto

Hi, I'm Rania! As someone who started uni this year, I know how simultaneously terrifying and thrilling it is to get involved. I'm standing for Fresher's Rep because I want everyone to feel as welcomed as I've felt in Stage Crew, whether that be through socials or just by being a friendly ear. Whether you're a fresher wondering how you can get involved in Stage Crew and confused about Stage Crew lingo ("what is the Range, again?") or a part Lead Crew on a show this term, I want you to feel confident and included.

As your Fresher's Rep, I'll:

  • Organise socials and opportunities for us to connect with each other, whether it be casual pub trips, hanging out in the Green Room, or watching another UCL show!
  • Be a friendly ear, whether you're stressed out or simply want to share your excitement about a perfect lighting cue to someone who gets it.
  • Bake banana bread sometimes and bring it for people to have (because I like baking but I actually don't like eating baked goods that much).
  • Act as your voice--any questions, ideas, or suggestions will be passed along to committee and taken seriously.
  • Give you UCL Stage Crew stickers :)

All in all, I'd love the opportunity to act as your representative. Feel free to text or WA me with any questions!
