I have long enjoyed playing an active role in school life. During my school career I organised the school’s history society and gave multiple talks at it on topics such as Russian pop culture in the 90s and politics under Yeltsin. I also set up and captained my own volleyball club. Now that I’m at uni, I’d love the opportunity to be involved and play an active role in my departmental society - SSEEES soc.
I come from a multi-national background and have long had an interest in Eastern European affairs. Now that I’m just over a month into my studies in SSEES, I’ve had a ton of fun getting to meet many different like-minded people from countless diverse backgrounds. It is my hope that by joining the SSEES-society I’d be able to give back to the fantastic student body I’ve come to know, while simultaneously getting to know even more interesting people who are passionate about their chosen topic of study and just as eager to get to know more about what shapes and defines the SSEES region as I am.
To finish off, a few words about myself. I’d like to believe that my 6 years in acrobatic gymnastics, having represented team GB twice in the sport, has taught me discipline and organisation skills as well as the importance of collaboration and being a team player.
I really really appreciate this opportunity to be able to work with the student committee and hope that my nomination is taken into consideration.
Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed faculty, and my amazing fellow students,
Thank you all for being here today! My name is Simone, and I’m thrilled to be running for the role of SSEES First-Year Representative. Stepping into the SSEES community, each of us has already taken a huge leap, not only into a world-class university but into a truly unique faculty that celebrates the rich cultures, histories, and languages of Eastern Europe and beyond. As we embark on this journey, we deserve a voice that truly represents us, our ideas, and our ambitions. I believe I can be that voice, and I’m excited to tell you why.
Coming into a new academic environment can be overwhelming, especially at a place as dynamic as SSEES. I’m committed to making sure our journey here is engaging, supportive, and filled with opportunities. My vision as your representative is to create a more connected and interactive student community, where each one of us feels valued and involved.
Once elected, I will focus on three key areas:
1. Communication: I will make it easy for each of you to share your ideas, concerns, and suggestions. I’m planning regular forums and feedback sessions to ensure that your voices reach the right people.
2. Academic Support and Resources: Whether it's organizing study groups, peer mentoring, or guest lectures with industry professionals, I’m here to enrich our academic experience and help us make the most out of our time at SSEES.
3. Social Events and Networking: Building lasting relationships is crucial, and I want to
