Zach Austgen

Hi, I'm Zach! I'm a second-year ESPS student from San Diego, California, and I'm running for the Communications Officer position.

I have been coming to classes since my first week of uni and now love the classes and people so much, which is why I want to involve myself more in society! There is such a great sense of community at salsa, and being a committee member would allow me to both engage more and support that community. Besides just adoring society, I also really enjoy taking on roles like Communications Officer and the student engagement that it brings. I have been elected into positions like these all throughout high school and was even the school president in my last year! I have been running social media accounts for numerous clubs for around the last four years, and through these experiences and others, I have gotten good at student leadership/organization and at working well with my peers; plus, it is work that I really enjoy. I would love the opportunity to be a committee member and take on some more responsibility. I am so excited at the thought of getting closer to the Salsa Society and helping it run.

Thanks so much!

Hey salseros and salseras!

My name is Hwee and I am standing today to be elected as one of your communications officer.

Many of you will know me from helping out at class registrations, classes themselves or at the socials that our lovely society has organised, but most of you will probably know me from the numerous (in other words way too many) things I post and talk about on the group chat. I have been helping out with almost all of the material you see on our instagram since the term started, as well as the weekly schedule postings on our announcement.

Due to democracy, I now have to actually apply to the position to do my job, so please listen to my heartfelt plea to elect me as your communication's officer. I would like to continue helping out the committee to make sure that everyone knows about the great classes, workshops and events that we have. Thank you and remember to vote for me.

With loads of love,

Hwee

Salsa is not only one of the best forms of creative expression and cultural celebration in UCL, it has made me grow in confidence this past year and a half and discover things about myself, my interests, and my abilities that I was never aware of. The society has also brought me to meeting some of my closest friends, without whom first year would not have been survived, and I am not exaggerating when I say that I forever grateful to have met them and the wonderful community that has welcomed me so lovingly.

I want to do my part and give back to this society by standing as Communications officer, so I can give to Salsa Soc my skills of organisation and ability to advertise the amazing opportunities we offer, and be a friendly face to both new and old Salseros!

My experience comes mainly from running and being chair of 3 societies at my sixth form - MUN, Law Society. and History + Politics Society, but also from being an ambassador of my school and of the current UCL law society, which has helped me hone my interpersonal skills as well as skills of communication.

I’m running for Communications Officer because, over the past year I have been involved with Salsa, I have become really passionate not only about salsa but also the kind, supportive and welcoming community. I’d really like for more people to know about it, so they too can experience the positive impact it’s had on me, my confidence and my social life in the last year. I want to give back to Salsa, and get further involved through this role by making sure everyone knows what’s going on with the society and encourage people to get involved whether it’s through the classes or the socials!!

I have experience from a similar role in college where I helped run and advertise women in physics society (women in stem appreciation!!) so I’d love another chance to be a part of a society committee. I’m excited to make sure Salsa Society is a space where everyone feels connected and can always have a great time :)

I'm standing for the role of Communications Officer because I believe in the power of salsa to bring people together and create a welcoming, vibrant community. Having started as a beginner myself last year with no dance experience, I know how intimidating it can feel to try something new. That’s why I want to make our Instagram an inviting, inclusive space that captures the true spirit of our society—a place where everyone feels welcome, no matter their level of experience.

I have a solid working knowledge of Canva and experience assisting with content creation for a new initiative, which has helped me develop key skills for managing social media. I’m familiar with Instagram’s features, including reels, posts, and the strategic use of tags, all of which are essential to growing our online presence. I’m excited to build a social media hub that not only keeps everyone informed but also celebrates our community, creativity, and shared passion for salsa in every post.
