The physics society so far has treated me well, I made most of my friends in physics through the society events. I feel the society would be valuable to more people especially in their first year, and so I want to try and increase its outreach by voicing some of the opinions of the first years and their preference in terms of the types of events and support students seek from the society. I am hoping that by running as a first year representative I am able to give back to the society for what it has done so far for me and improve on it so that it can benefit more students.

I'm standing to be a first-year rep because I want to make our time here as physics enthusiasts much more than just earning degrees in theoretical physics theoretical degrees in physics (Courtesy: Physics Society merch).  With a bit of momentum from my experience as Student Council President, I believe I can bring first years together and ensure that their concerns and feedback are addressed promptly.

Physics can feel like a black hole of formulae, theories, and equations, especially for us relatively inexperienced first years, but my goal is to help make it accessible and enjoyable. Using my previous experience of organising fundraisers and interactive workshops, I'd like to bring in more trivia nights, quizzes, interactive academic sessions, and subject-specific study groups (with free snacks, maybe?), to make the Society a place where first-years are active participants- who are free to discuss their theories and explore Physics, nurturing their passion for the subject while bonding with the next generation of Hawkings and Feynmans.

I may be new to UCL, but I'd like to jump into this role with the same energy that drove me to study Physics. I aim to be a positive charge in the Physics Society, creating a space where we can grow and explore the thrill of Physics, together.

Vote for me and let's make this Society a space for learning, support, and laughter! (And of course, more physics puns and free snacks :) )

I’m really passionate about physics and love diving into it beyond what we learn in class. Becoming a first-year representative for the physics society would be an amazing way to deepen that passion and get involved in exciting events that make complex physics fun and approachable. Plus, it’s a great chance to start building experiences that tie into my goal of a future in astrophysics research.

Helping to organise these events would not only be super rewarding but would also help me grow my communication and leadership skills. I’m excited to meet and work with other students who share my interest in physics, making connections and friendships that will last well beyond university.

Being part of the physics society as a first-year representative wouldn’t just fuel my curiosity—it would give me a better understanding of how the committee works, which is an opportunity I don’t want to miss.

I am standing for the position of First Year Representative in the UCL Physics Society because I am passionate about making Physics more accessible and engaging to others. As a Theoretical Physics student, I have seen firsthand how physics is not only a powerful tool in understanding the universe, but also an integral part of our everyday lives. I want to share this enthusiasm with others and help bridge the gap between physics and the rest of the students.

I am really passionate about helping people and forging meaningful connections, something that shines through my commitment to participate in every event I can and trying to make a positive change wherever I can. I am also motivated to help scale up the Physics Society, and I believe that one of the best ways to do this is through engaging with first-year students and thinking proactively about ways we can improve our events, resources, and overall experience for everyone.

As First Year Representative, I plan to set these ideas in motion by organizing events that connect first-year students with the society and the wider physics community, while also advocating for improvements that will enhance our collective experience. I am excited about the opportunity to fulfill the role's responsibilities and make a meaningful contribution to the Physics Society during my time at UCL.

Hey everyone,

You must have seen me yapping in one way or another in the Physics Society WhatsApp group or the Physics Freshers 2024 group. Be it your personal safety (I have flashbacks from the guy trying to chase me on Warren Street still) or even just a small inconvenience like a lecturer not making decent slides or speaking loud enough for people to hear or even just the general scheduling for Physics Society events, I'm here to provide you support. I already released notes for all modules for free on the Physics Freshers 2024 group earlier, so you can have faith in the fact that I'm here to help YOU FIRST. With that said, vote for me and I hope to have all your issues taken up. And kindly do not take any jokes I may have mentioned about astrophysics to heart. We love all astrophysicists here as much as they love the universal gravitational constant.

Fanni Valisalo

Hi there!

I hope you are all well.

I am Fanni, a theoretical physics student from Sweden. I do not want to waste your time, so I will be concise.

Throughout middle-and-high school, I was involved in several projects, the main ones being co-founder and leader of outreach and logistics of the environmental club for 6 years, Student Council President, Youth Ocean Champion for Keep Sweden Tidy (one of the biggest environmental organisations in Sweden), and currently I serve as the co-founder and leader of the UK Youth Chapter branch of the International Women in Business 4 AI (IWIB4AI) global think-tank.

If you couldn't tell already, I ADORE working with people and organisations inside and outside UCL. The people are truly what make a society so great, and I can tell from meeting some of you at the past Phys Soc social events that this community is going to be a great one. This is the attitude that I will bring with me as First-Year Representative, and know that you can always come to me with any idea and I promise you that we'll try to make it happen together.

If we see eye-to-eye, I hope you vote for me.

Kind regards,
Fanni
