I am standing in this by-election because I'm a committed first year member of IR Society. To start, as a first year Politics and International Relations student I have a strong interest in International Relations overall. It's always an exciting to learn about on of the many ways the world interacts with itself and people come to meet each other. In my opinion, societies like IR Society that focus so deeply on what I consider to be an incredibly significant subject is great as it opens the subject up for engagement with so many other societies, departments and just members of the UCL community.
My experience as a first year member of this society has been wonderful so far and I wish to help the society and its members find a similar degree of fulfilment, fun and enjoyment out of it. Having led previous clubs and societies in my high school I remain enthusiastic in my passion to unite people under common interests and ensure that they feel welcome as a member of both the society itself and the UCL community which I believe societies help to solidify. Finding belonging and connection is an important thing for first years, especially international students like me who have left home perhaps for the first time. That is why I am standing for the role of first year rep, as my experiences to best represent the perspective, ideas and feelings of other first years, especially the members, is one that I hold personally and remain close to everyday.
Thank you for your consideration.
Hello everyone!
I am a first year student in politics and international relations and I am running for First Year Rep to ensure our voices are heard, that we feel fully included in all society activities. Last year, I was a finalist in an eloquence contest where I spoke on the idea that “the altruist is a reasonable egoist.” This theme inspired me to dedicate my time to others and since then, I have been tutoring younger students in French and English. This experience has strengthened my communication, organization and leadership skills—all crucial for a First Year Rep.
If elected, I will bring this dedication to represent you effectively. Let's enjoy this year together!!

Hi guys! I’m Aya, a first-year studying Politics and International Relations.
I’d like to be first-year rep for the society as I want to ensure that your voice as a first-year is heard in the committee. Having had experience representing others on a local and national scale, I am confident I can represent your views throughout the university to highlight concerns and things you would want to make your university experience that much greater.
Before coming here, I had this fear of not fitting in, and after having participated in the society, I want to encourage others to be a part of this community, whether that’s highlighting some great career links the society has, to helping plan for some super cool socials!
As your first-year rep, I’d be sure to act as a friendly face for any other fresher who is interested in joining the society, and be sure to take the time to listen to your ideas personally. I believe this opportunity will give me the chance to get to know more first-years not only on my course, but outside of it to, as well as the chance to connect with people about things other than international relations!
So, vote for Aya, if you want your first year in the society to be totally fire!
Hi! My name is Jessica, and I’m a first-year Politics and International Relations student. I’m hoping to run for the First Year Rep in the society!
I’m dedicated to connecting first-year students with the society and making sure you are involved with the club. As a committee member, I will always make sure that you are informed of the events that are happening in the society, and that you know how and when to join them. I will also work closely with the rest of the committee to organise events that you’d actually want to participate in. I’ll always listen to your voices by collecting regular opinion polls and advocating for our year group.
My ultimate goal as a first-year rep is to make you feel included within the society, and let everyone make the best out of their first year at university!
