Abby Lande

I’m Abby and I’m standing for Freshers’ rep because of my passion for the sport and also as a continuation of my 8-year commitment to dancing and being a team leader. Being on committee first year would be an amazing experience, and the opportunity to oversee the production of shows and be a voice for my fellow freshers is both exciting and suits my organizational abilities. I’m eager to get to know both returning members and incoming freshers as part of this role and familiarize myself with the inner workings of dance society. Regardless of my role on committee, I will be very involved with supporting the various shows and weekly classes, but I believe based on my prior experience as a dance team captain and liaison, and given my current role as competition choreographer, I would be very well-suited for this role. I have experience acting as a mediator for inter-team discussions; for example, I was elected to be teen/senior teams’ representative for this past dance season at my previous studio, during which for the final recital (May 2024) I successfully advocated for the removal of a dance that we were all uncomfortable performing. I have the passion and the experience and I’m confident that if I am elected as Freshers’ representative, I will be an effective, supportive committee member and a voice for the newest society members.

In the few weeks I have been at UCL so far, Dance society has definitely been a highlight in my university experience and by electing me as your fresher’s rep I will do everything I can to make your experience here as enjoyable as can be! I will be sure to listen to all your concerns to then discuss them with committee and find adequate solutions. Dance has always been a major part of my life, so it is truly important to me that your time at dance soc happens in an inspiring, enjoyable, and enriching environment.

I’ve had a lot of fun in the past month or so dancing — getting back into breaking after multiple years and starting my dance journey into other styles like Hip-hop and Afro. Even though I’m still very much a beginner, my passion for dance has definitely become immense.

I have fallen in love with the dance society and its community. I have really enjoyed meeting and talking to so many people. I am very excited to meet and talk with many more new people!

I think I would be a good fit for the role of fresher’s representative because I love to help people and I am (or at least I try to be) fast in my replies.

I would like to put myself forward as this year’s Freshers Representative as I am truly passionate about the UCL Dance Society. It is a family which welcomes dance enthusiasts of all levels with open arms and I would love to become part of the team promoting our society’s innate values.

I’m aware just how overwhelming it may be; coming to UCL as a fresher and joining one of its biggest societies. As there are so many dance opportunities for freshers, I would make sure anyone who’s confused in the slightest about any of our events has a first point of contact of someone who is also a fresher and ready to clarify for them and feel confident in auditioning.

Speaking of auditions, I would also love to encourage freshers to audition for bigger shows such as Blooms, take up choreographer bids and thus feeling comfortable in stepping outside of their comfort zone.

I would equally strongly recommend freshers to attend Dance Society social events such as the Christmas Party as those are always so much fun and are an incredible opportunity to meet fellow freshers in the society and build our family even further.

Being part of the UCL Dance Society would be a huge honour and I am grateful to even be considered.

Thank you!

Chuwen Chen

Hi guys! My name's Chuwen Chen, and I am a first-year undergrad studying History and Politics of the Americas. I am super excited to be running for Freshers' Representative of Dance Soc. Dancing has become part of my life since I was five, with my favourite styles being commercial, hip-hop and a little bit of contemporary. I want to run for this role because I want to make every new member feel as at home as I have since joining.
I also had the privilege of starting and leading a dance society at my sixth form, organising weekly classes and performances and teaching dance to younger students, which again developed my leadership skills and further developed my passion for creating an inclusive community.
If elected as Freshers' Rep, my focus would be on creating a positive, inclusive, and fun environment so that everybody feels welcome and part of the group, irrespective of their dance ability. Dance should unite people, and I want to make it easy for all of us freshers to connect with and support each other throughout this year.
I will make this happen by having regular meetups that allow freshers to get to know one another and make new friends. I also plan to set up a buddy system: pairing freshers with older members of the society to create an immediate and strong network of support.
Let's make this year unforgettable together! Vote for me, Chuwen Chen, and make this the most welcoming, vibrant, inclusive dance community for all freshers!

Only 6 weeks in, and dance soc has already become my life! Taking classes or going to rehearsal is such a highlight of the day, and nothing beats seeing other talented dancers (and hyping everyone up - you’ll hear me :) I have loved the supportive feel so far and want bring my input to this lovely family <3 The freshers show will be over soon, so what will I do without my weekly 8 hours of rehearsal?? There is only one answer: run for freshers rep!! So far, you may have met me by doing the freshers show, the comps team, weekly classes (I love hip hop, contemp, commercial, tap, jazz… you name it!). I might also see you at the volunteering project and blooms (if auditions go well!) - so I’m sure we’ll get a chance to chat! I would be so honoured to be your freshers rep this year and bring your questions, quarries and concerns to the rest of the dance soc. Before hearing all your fab ideas, here are some of mine that we could look into: sending out forms on workshops you’d like to take, how you’re finding the rehearsal schedules, and if you’re interested in other activities such as choreography workshops, stretching/yoga, socials (both drinking and alcohol free), and …. maybe organise a dance soc trip to see a dance show in London? 🤞 Or go to workshops at the Manor (Pola + manor = 🩷). So there you go! My life is dance with a side of  studying (1st year undergrad ESPS). Also, every person in dance soc is my idol so joining the dance committee is my dream thanks. 🙏💫

Dahlia Djelouah

My name is Dahlia Djelouah, I am a first year HPE student and I would love to become a Freshers rep for the dance society.

While having danced my whole life, I had the chance to represent my dance group through different events (such as being dance captain during the filming of dance videos and shows) and i believe these previous experience could really help in becoming a representative for first year students in this society!

I understand the importance of collaboration and understanding in such a role. Listening, and committing to create a supportive environment are also incredibly important to me and seem to be what is necessary for this role . I want to ensure that all freshmen feel encouraged to share their ideas, knowing they have a representative who genuinely values their input and is willing to make sure their ideas are put forward.

I believe I’m well-suited to advocate for our ideas and i will work to shape a group that reflects the values of the dance community for the first year students !

Dance has always been a big part of my life, and since coming to ucl, the dance society has been my favorite part of the whole experience. I would love to help out in any way i can and contribute to this society by helping others feel as comfortable and welcomed as I had felt.

Being in 24hrs show, performing and choreographing for freshers show, and joining comps team has allowed me to meet so many people, especially freshers. I am often told by my friends that i am easily approachable and a good listener, so i hope i can be a friendly face to all, whether its to voice a concern or just to have a chat.

I have also gained leadership experience in the past, both at school and in dance. This has helped me become better at working with others and taking on responsibility, which makes me confident that i would be a good fit for the role as a Freshers Rep!

Sylvia Pan

I want to get behind the scenes in dance society, starting with becoming a committee member. As fresher’s representative, I would work with experienced committee members, allowing me to learn from the experienced members. These experiences will enable me to become an active member of the society in the future. I have had experience in my high school student government association, including two years as the treasurer and one year as the president. Therefore, I am experienced in hosting events and acting as the bridge between different communication parties. I am outgoing, enthusiastic, and responsible. I believe these traits will aid me in upholding this role as a fresher’s representative.
I want to be your first point of contact. I understand that joining new societies can be intimidating for freshers. As a fresher myself, I will be able to better understand your concerns. I am easy to communicate with and can get things done. Let me be the one to voice your needs, wants, and concerns. Your vote will guarantee that your fresher’s representative will be responsible, enthusiastic, determined, and caring.
