My vision for CCA is to widen access to cancer knowledge on two essential fronts:
To Freshers, many of us enter uni unfamiliar with cancer research. I want to empower freshers, regardless of academic background, to engage with pressing cancer issues. By providing resources and opportunities to connect with current research and volunteer meaningfully with patients, I aim to foster a generation of informed advocates.
- Enhancing the Seminar Series: Expanding our seminars to include insights from charity workers, patients, oncologists, and postgraduate students, potentially through a podcast format.
- Establishing a Mentorship Program: Pairing upper-year students with freshers to guide them through academic challenges and inspire interest in cancer research.
- Monthly Journal Club: focusing on popular science literature and recent developments in cancer research.
To patients, I want to provide educational and emotional support, with clear information about their options and a compassionate space for sharing experiences, including:
- More Pathways for Engagement: Facilitating volunteer opportunities, placing our newsletter in hospitals, and developing a children’s book to introduce cancer in an accessible way.
- Developing an Instagram Series: Highlighting different cancers, their demographic impacts, and charities, encouraging donations and volunteering.
- Organizing Fundraising Events: Planning fundraisers, from bake sales to a Charity Ball, to raise support for cancer charities.
