Idea for research
Idea for research
As part of our contribution to The Stay Project—a seven-year initiative supporting those on the frontline of suicide prevention across London—London Nightline is launching a new workshop designed to support the wellbeing student-facing academic and support staff. This includes tutors, reception teams, wellbeing staff, lecturers, residence teams, and anyone who supports students as part of their role.

The workshop focuses on two essential areas:
• How staff can look after their own wellbeing while supporting students
• How to respond safely and compassionately when a student discloses suicidal thoughts or other difficult mental-health experiences

This will be the first pilot run of the workshop. We are looking for a student with an interest in data analysis, mental health, psychology, evaluation, or social research to help us analyse the feedback and explore areas of strength and future development.

We will be collecting:
• Quantitative data: Likert-scale feedback (e.g., confidence levels before/after, perceived usefulness, clarity, etc.)
• Qualitative data: Short written responses about the session, what staff found helpful, and what could be improved

Impact of idea
Supporting students in crisis can place a heavy emotional load on academic and frontline staff. Many experience burnout, fatigue, or isolation, often without adequate support.

By analysing feedback from this workshop, the student will help London Nightline:
• understand how well the session meets staff needs
• identify gaps or areas for improvement
• inform future delivery so that staff feel more confident, supported, and equipped

This work contributes directly to a healthier, safer environment across London universities for both staff and students.
If you are passionate about mental health, data analysis, or creating positive change in higher education, this project offers a meaningful and practical research experience.
